The Rich Solar 40 Amp MPPT Solar Charge Controller Handles Up to 1,100W of Solar on 12V and 24V Battery Systems

The Rich Solar 40 Amp MPPT Solar Charge Controller (RS-MPPT40) charges 12V or 24V batteries at up to 40A and is recommended for solar arrays up to 550W at 12V or 1,100W at 24V. MPPT tracking efficiency is rated above 99%, with up to 98% conversion efficiency, so mid-size RV, cabin and off-grid arrays deliver more of their output to the battery.

The controller accepts up to 100V of solar input, supports sealed, gel, flooded and lithium batteries, and can charge over-discharged lithium batteries. An LCD with LED indicators shows system status and fault codes, a 20A load output runs DC loads directly, and an RS232 port connects to the optional Rich Solar BT-1 Bluetooth module.

Rich Solar 40 Amp MPPT Solar Charge Controller Features

40A of MPPT Charging

Maximum power point tracking keeps your array at its most productive voltage and converts surplus voltage into extra charging current. With up to 40A of charging, the controller can refill a large battery bank faster than a 20A or 30A model.

Up to 1,100W of Solar

Rich Solar recommends up to 550W of solar on a 12V system and 1,100W on a 24V system. The controller accepts up to 50A of PV short-circuit current and up to 100V of solar input at 77°F (25°C), or 90V at -13°F (-25°C).

12V and 24V Auto Detection

The controller identifies 12V or 24V systems automatically during installation, so the same unit works if you move from a 12V to a 24V battery bank.

Lithium and Lead-Acid Support

Charging settings cover sealed, gel, flooded and lithium batteries. The controller can also charge lithium batteries that have been over-discharged.

LCD Display and Optional Bluetooth

The LCD and LED indicators show charging status, battery information, operating parameters and fault codes. Add the optional BT-1 module through the RS232 port to monitor the system from your phone.

Protection and a Die-Cast Aluminum Case

Electronic protection guards against reverse polarity, overcharging, overload, short circuit and reverse current. The die-cast aluminum housing helps dissipate heat during long charging days.

Real-World Applications

RVs and fifth wheels. Run a 400W to 550W roof array on a 12V lithium house bank.

Off-grid cabins. Charge a 24V battery bank from up to 1,100W of panels.

Vans and overland rigs. Pair a larger roof array with a high-capacity lithium battery.

Boats. Keep house batteries charged from several deck or arch panels.

Backup power systems. Recharge a home backup battery bank from solar during outages.

How It Compares to Common Alternatives

Versus the Rich Solar 20 Amp MPPT controller. The 20A model is recommended for 260W at 12V. The 40A model supports more than twice that solar and adds reverse current protection.

Versus the Rich Solar BRAVO 30. The BRAVO 30 has Bluetooth built in and supports up to 500W at 12V. The 40A controller handles up to 550W at 12V and 1,100W at 24V, with Bluetooth available through the BT-1 module.

Versus a PWM controller. A PWM controller cannot convert surplus panel voltage into current. MPPT typically harvests more energy, especially from series-wired panels and in cold weather.

Is This Controller the Right Fit

  • Array size. Rich Solar recommends up to 550W at 12V or 1,100W at 24V.
  • Input limits. Keep open-circuit voltage under 100V at 77°F, or 90V at -13°F, and short-circuit current under 50A.
  • Wiring. The terminals accept wire up to 8 AWG. Plan cable runs and fusing with that limit in mind.
  • Location. The IP32 rating calls for a dry, protected mounting spot.

This may be a good fit if

  • You have 400W to 1,100W of solar on a 12V or 24V system
  • You want MPPT charging up to 40A
  • You use lithium, gel, AGM or flooded batteries
  • You want a load output for DC lights or pumps

Common Questions

Does It Have Bluetooth?

Not built in. It supports the optional Rich Solar BT-1 Bluetooth module through its RS232 port.

Can It Charge a 24V Battery Bank?

Yes. It detects 12V or 24V automatically and supports up to 1,100W of solar at 24V.

What Is the Load Output For?

The 20A load output can power DC loads such as lights or a small pump directly from the controller.

Does Cold Weather Affect the Input Limit?

Yes. Panel voltage rises in the cold, and Rich Solar lists a 90V maximum input at -13°F. Size strings so cold-morning open-circuit voltage stays under that limit.
