The Rich Solar 500 Amp Battery Monitor With Shunt Shows Accurate Voltage, Current and Capacity for 8V to 120V Battery Banks

The Rich Solar 500 Amp Battery Monitor With Shunt (RS-BM500) measures what goes into and out of your battery bank, so you know exactly how much capacity is left. It works with battery systems from 8V to 120V, handles up to 500A through its shunt, and reads voltage, current and capacity to within ±1.0%.

The shunt mounts close to the battery on the negative cable, and a backlit remote display mounts flush in a wall where you can see it. The monitor draws only 10mA while working and 1mA in standby. This listing offers the battery monitor kit and an optional metal bezel (RS-BM500BZ) for the display.

Rich Solar 500 Amp Battery Monitor With Shunt Features

Shunt-Based Measurement

Unlike a voltage-only meter, the shunt measures every amp flowing in and out of the battery. That gives a true state-of-charge reading for lithium batteries, whose voltage stays nearly flat across most of their capacity.

±1.0% Accuracy

Rich Solar rates voltage, current and capacity accuracy at ±1.0%, so you can plan loads and charging with confidence.

Wide 8V to 120V Range

The monitor works on battery systems from 8V to 120V, covering 12V, 24V and 48V banks and higher-voltage systems. Capacity can be tracked from 0.1Ah to 9,999Ah.

Up to 500A

The included shunt is rated for 500A, which covers large 12V inverters and high-current DC loads in RV, marine and off-grid systems.

Low Self-Consumption

Working dissipation is 10mA and standby dissipation is just 1mA, so the monitor itself barely affects your battery. The backlight draws 80mA when on.

Backlit Remote Display

The backlit display stays readable at night and in dim battery bays. It connects to the shunt with the included shielded cable and snaps into a cutout in a wall or panel.

Real-World Applications

RVs and travel trailers. See exactly how much house battery capacity is left while boondocking.

Vans and campers. Track solar and alternator charging and daily power use.

Boats. Monitor the house bank from the cabin instead of the battery compartment.

Off-grid cabins. Watch a 24V or 48V bank's state of charge through the seasons.

Batteries without Bluetooth. Add accurate monitoring to batteries such as the ALPHA 3 LITE that have no built-in app.

How It Compares to Common Alternatives

Versus a voltage-only meter. Battery voltage gives only a rough idea of charge, especially with lithium batteries. A shunt monitor counts amp-hours for a much more accurate reading.

Versus a battery's built-in Bluetooth. Built-in apps need a phone within Bluetooth range. The RS-BM500 shows the bank's status on a fixed wall display that anyone can read at a glance.

Versus a charge controller display. A controller only sees solar charging. The shunt measures every source and every load connected to the battery.

Is This Monitor the Right Fit

  • Current. Make sure your system's maximum current is within the 500A shunt rating.
  • Wiring. The battery's negative terminal must connect directly to the shunt's B- side, with no other connections on the negative terminal.
  • Tools. Plan on a wrench, drill, jigsaw, crimp tool and two ring terminals sized for your battery cable. Ring terminals are not included.
  • Display location. The display mounts in a wall cutout. Plan a route for the cable back to the shunt.

This may be a good fit if

  • You want an accurate state-of-charge reading for a lithium or lead-acid bank
  • Your battery bank runs anywhere from 8V to 120V
  • You want a wall-mounted display instead of a phone app
  • Your system draws up to 500A

Common Questions

Where Does the Shunt Go?

Mount it as close to the battery as possible on the negative side. The battery's negative terminal connects directly to the shunt's B- side, with no other connections on that terminal. Follow Rich Solar's wiring diagram for the rest of the system.

How Does the Monitor Get Power?

The included B+ wire connects the shunt's B+ terminal to the battery positive, and the shielded cable connects the shunt to the display.

Does It Work on 48V Systems?

Yes. It supports battery systems from 8V to 120V.

What Is the Metal Bezel?

The RS-BM500BZ metal bezel is an optional trim for the remote display, sold as a separate option in this listing.
