Transfer Switch Options

1. 100 A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch (Model 7224)

Purpose:

• Powers only pre-selected essential circuits.

How it works:

• Installed as a subpanel with its own breakers.
• During installation, your electrician moves up to 16 important circuits (e.g., fridge, furnace, lights, internet, sump pump) into this subpanel.
• When the generator runs, it powers only those circuits — everything else stays off.

Advantages:

• Lower cost for both equipment and installation.
• Ensures your generator isn’t overloaded because only essential loads are connected.

Considerations:

• Not flexible — you can’t easily power a non-essential circuit unless it was wired into the 16-circuit subpanel.
• May require compromises if you have more than 16 circuits you want backed up.

2. 200 A Whole-House Transfer Switch (Model 7225)

Purpose:

• Powers everything in your home that your generator can support.

How it works:

• Installed at the service entrance (between the utility meter and your main breaker panel).
• Switches the entire electrical panel from utility power to generator power.
• Your home’s main breaker and existing circuits remain intact — no need to choose specific loads ahead of time.

Advantages:

• Seamless “whole-home” backup capability.
• Flexible — you can decide in real time which loads to run by turning breakers on or off in your panel.

Considerations:

• More expensive and typically requires a generator large enough to handle major loads if you want to run them all.
• Installation is usually more involved because it connects at the service entrance.
