Black octagonal high-saturation ferrite for home incoming power wires

The Faraday Defense EMP Whole-House Ferrite Clamps Around Your Incoming Power Wires to Help Suppress High-Frequency Energy at the Breaker Panel

The EMP Whole-House Ferrite is a custom high-saturation ferrite made of a special high-frequency material. Faraday Defense modifies each one individually to increase its saturation level, so it can suppress high-frequency energy while high current flows through the wire. It clamps around an insulated incoming power wire in your breaker panel and has a 0.72 in inner diameter, 1.5 in outer diameter and 1.9 in length.

It's for homeowners building EMP and solar CME protection for the whole house, starting where power enters. This listing is for one ferrite. Faraday says most homes need three, one each for Line 1, Line 2 and the shared Neutral/Ground, so most buyers order a quantity of three.

EMP Whole-House Ferrite Features

Built for High Current

Faraday explains that normal ferrites won't work well on incoming power wires because of current saturation. These ferrites are individually modified to raise their saturation levels, which lets them keep suppressing high-frequency energy under higher currents.

Clamps Around a Single Wire

High-saturation ferrites clip around individual high-current wires. The hinged housing opens, closes around the insulated wire and latches shut, so the wire doesn't need to be disconnected and fed through.

Sized for Service Wires

Each ferrite has a 0.72 in inner diameter, a 1.5 in outer diameter and a 1.9 in length. Check that the inner diameter fits around your insulated incoming power wires before you order.

Step One of Faraday's Home Plan

Faraday recommends a three-step approach to protecting a home from an EMP or CME. Step one is installing these ferrites over your incoming power wires. Step two is a quality whole-house surge protection device, and step three is smaller broadband ferrites around the power cords of sensitive electronics.

Real-World Applications

Standard three-wire service. Three ferrites cover Line 1, Line 2 and a shared Neutral/Ground.

Four-wire service. Some homes have four wires, Line 1, Line 2, Neutral and Ground, and need four ferrites.

Layered home protection. Pair the ferrites at the panel with a whole-house surge protector and broadband ferrites on the cords of sensitive electronics.

Practical Comparison

EMP Whole-House Ferrite Versus a Standard Clip-On Ferrite

Faraday says normal ferrites won't work well on incoming power wires because of current saturation. The whole-house ferrite is individually modified to raise its saturation level for incoming power wires.

EMP Whole-House Ferrite Versus a Toroid Ferrite

A toroid goes on by feeding the wires through it, which means getting to the wire ends. Faraday recommends a clip-on high-saturation ferrite when high current flows and you can't easily reach the ends or a broadband ferrite won't fit around the wires, or when there isn't room for a large toroid.

Buyer Guidance

How Many to Order

Count the incoming power wires at your panel. Most homes need three ferrites for Line 1, Line 2 and a shared Neutral/Ground. If your home has four wires, Line 1, Line 2, Neutral and Ground, order four.

Installation

This ferrite is installed inside your breaker panel. Faraday says to always consult the manufacturer's instructions and to have a professional electrician do the installation for safety. We recommend a licensed electrician.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You're building EMP or CME protection for your home
  • You want protection where power enters the house
  • You'll have a licensed electrician install it
  • You plan to add surge protection and broadband ferrites too

Common Questions

Is This a Single Ferrite or a Set?

It's a single ferrite. Most homes need three, so order the quantity your panel needs.

Will It Make Any Noise?

It might. Faraday notes that ferrites tend to make a humming or buzzing noise when high currents flow through them.

Can I Use It on Other Wiring?

It's designed for the insulated incoming power wires in a breaker panel. For power cords of computers, TVs and other electronics, Faraday points to smaller broadband ferrites instead.
