Power Station or Inverter Generator?

Both are popular at camp. Here's how they differ.

Power Station Inverter Generator
Noise Near silent Quieter than most generators, but you'll hear it
Fuel Recharges from solar, your car or a wall outlet Gasoline or propane
Quiet hours Fine any time Many campgrounds limit generator hours
In a tent or camper Safe inside Outdoors only
Big loads like AC Larger models only Handles them easily
Runtime Until the battery runs down; solar extends it As long as you have fuel

Many campers pair a power station and solar with a small generator for cloudy days.

How to Choose

  1. List Your Gear

Write down everything you'll plug in, from phones and lights to a fridge or CPAP.

  2. Add Up the Watt-Hours

Multiply each device's watts by the hours you'll use it. The calculator does the math.

    Open the Calculator
  3. Plan How You'll Recharge

Solar panels, your car or a generator keep you going on longer trips.

Common Questions About Camping Power

What size power station do I need for camping?

For phones, lights and a small fan, 300–700 Wh covers a weekend. Add a 12V fridge or a CPAP and you'll want 1,000–2,000 Wh, plus a solar panel to recharge during the day.

Can a power station run a 12V fridge?

Yes. Most 12V camping fridges use about 300–700 Wh a day, depending on size and outside temperature, so a 1,000 Wh power station runs one for a day or more. Solar keeps it going longer.

How long does it take to recharge with solar?

It depends on panel size and sun. In good sun, a 200W panel adds roughly 500–800 Wh over a day, and a 400W panel about twice that. See How to Use Solar Panels With a Portable Power Station.

Can I use a power station inside my tent?

Yes. Power stations make no fumes or flames, so they're safe inside a tent or camper. Keep them dry and out of direct sun.

Can I charge a power station from my car?

Most can, from the car's 12V outlet, but it's slow, often around 100W. An alternator charger is much faster if you often camp from a vehicle.

Is a power station or a generator better for camping?

A power station is silent and fine during quiet hours. An inverter generator runs as long as you have fuel and handles big loads like an AC, but many campgrounds limit generator hours.
