Survival Gear That Lights Your Way, Starts A Fire And Keeps A Tool Within Reach

Survival gear is the small, dependable kit you reach for when the power goes out, the trail runs past dark or the weather turns. This collection brings together survival gear from Dark Energy: a rechargeable lighter, a five-in-one carabiner tool and three rechargeable lights. The lighter and the lights all recharge over USB, so you can top them up from a wall adapter, a power bank or a portable solar panel instead of carrying lighter fluid or spare disposable batteries.

For light, the Pharos Flashlight puts up to 1,800 lumens into a 5.3 x 1 inch aluminum body that weighs 4.7 ounces. It has four brightness modes plus strobe, up to 350 hours of runtime on its lowest setting and an IP67 rating. The Oracle Headlamp gives you up to 900 lumens of white light and three levels of red light for keeping your night vision, with up to 50 hours of runtime and IP66 water and dust protection. The Sentinel Telescoping Light extends to 75.6 inches for 800 lumens of hands-free area light, and its head unscrews to work as a 600 lumen flashlight with a magnetic base.

For fire, the Plasma Lighter makes a dual-arc plasma beam instead of a flame, so there is no butane to refill. Dark Energy describes it as windproof and water-resistant, and it adds a flashlight with a strobe. For everyday tasks, the Carabiner Pro is an all-metal five-in-one tool with a sharp blade, screwdrivers, a bottle opener, a glass breaker and a carabiner for clipping it to a pack or a key ring. It's an everyday-carry tool, not climbing equipment, so never use it to hold a person or a load.

Choose survival gear by how you'll use it. A headlamp keeps both hands free for setting up camp or working on a vehicle at night. A pocket flashlight is easy to carry every day. A telescoping area light brightens a whole campsite or a room during an outage. Keep the lighter and the multi-tool in your vehicle or go-bag so they're there when you need them, and check the charge on the lights and the lighter before you pack them.

Pair your survival gear with a way to keep it charged. Rugged power banks such as the Dark Energy Poseidon Pro recharge phones and other USB gear in the field, and portable solar panels can top them up from the sun. Survival Gear FAQs

What is survival gear?

Survival gear is the equipment you keep on hand for times when you're away from power or help, such as a reliable light, a way to start a fire and a basic tool. This collection covers those three needs with Dark Energy's rechargeable lights, its Plasma Lighter and the Carabiner Pro multi-tool. Keep them in a go-bag, a vehicle or your pack so they're ready for a power outage, a late return from the trail or a roadside stop.

How does a plasma lighter work?

A plasma lighter uses its rechargeable battery to make an electric arc instead of a flame, so it needs no butane or lighter fluid. The Dark Energy Plasma Lighter makes a dual-arc plasma beam that you hold to tinder or a candle wick, and it recharges over USB. Dark Energy describes it as windproof and water-resistant, and it also works as a small flashlight with a strobe mode. It has a safety latch and a flip-up lid over the arc.

How bright should a survival flashlight be?

Look for a light with several brightness levels, because a low setting saves battery for reading or moving around camp, while a high setting lights up a trail or a work area. The Pharos Flashlight reaches 1,800 lumens with four modes plus strobe and up to 350 hours on low. The Oracle Headlamp reaches 900 lumens and adds red light, and the Sentinel puts 800 lumens over a whole area from up to 75.6 inches high.

Is the Carabiner Pro rated for climbing?

No, the Carabiner Pro is sold as an everyday-carry multi-tool, not as climbing equipment, so never use it to hold a person or a load. Use the carabiner to clip the tool to a pack, a belt loop or your keys. Its all-metal body holds a sharp blade, screwdrivers, a bottle opener and a glass breaker, which makes it a handy tool to keep in a vehicle or a go-bag.

Are these survival lights waterproof?

Each light carries its own Dark Energy rating. The Pharos Flashlight is rated IP67, the Oracle Headlamp IP66 and the Sentinel Telescoping Light IP65, and the Sentinel's remote is not covered by that rating. Dark Energy advises keeping the USB-C charging port covers fully closed before exposure to rain or dust, and checking the covers and seals before wet use.

How do I charge survival gear without power?

Charge it from a power bank or a portable solar panel. The Dark Energy lights recharge over USB-C and the Plasma Lighter recharges over USB, so a charged power bank such as the Poseidon Pro, or a Spectre solar panel with a USB port, can top them up at camp or during an outage. Solar output depends on sunlight, angle and shade, so charging a power bank by day and your lights from it at night is a practical routine.
