The Dark Energy Sentinel Telescoping Light Rises to 75.6 Inches for 800 Lumens of Hands-Free Camp Lighting, Then Comes Off as a Flashlight
The Dark Energy Sentinel Telescoping Light is a two-in-one light. Set it up on its tripod base and raise the telescoping section up to 75.6 in (1920 mm) for up to 800 lumens of area light, or unscrew the head to use it as a separate flashlight with a magnetic base. It charges over USB-C, runs up to 20 hours on its low settings by Dark Energy's estimate, and folds to 2 x 18.5 in (50 x 470 mm) at 1.3 lb (588 g).
Dark Energy built it as a camp-lighting system for the tent, the car and time around camp with friends and family. It suits campers, anglers, RV and overland travelers, and anyone who wants one light for the campsite, the garage and a power outage at home. A wireless remote comes with it.
Sentinel Telescoping Light Features
A Telescoping Stand That Raises the Light Over Camp
Push the triangle button on the bottom of the stand to start setup, spread the base to its 20 in (508 mm) footprint, then raise the telescoping section. At full height the light sits 75.6 in (1920 mm) up, so it spreads over a campsite or work area instead of lighting just the ground at your feet.
Floodlight Mode Up to 800 Lumens
Floodlight mode, also called lantern mode, gives you 3 levels: 40, 400 and 800 lumens. Dark Energy rates them at about 20, 8 and 4 hours, and runtime varies with battery condition, conditions, mode and use. The floodlight uses a warmer 4000K color temperature that suits the space around a tent or picnic table.
Flashlight Mode Up to 600 Lumens
Double-click the power button while the light is on to switch to flashlight mode, with 40, 200 and 600 lumen levels rated at about 20, 8 and 4 hours. The flashlight uses a cooler 6500K color temperature. Double-click again to go back to floodlight mode.
A Removable Light With a Magnetic Base and Hook Loop
Unscrew the light head from the tripod base and it becomes a separate handheld light. Its base is magnetic, and a hook loop on top lets you hang it. Dark Energy suggests the detached light for use in a tent, at home or during auto repairs.
Wireless Remote That Stores on the Light
The included remote attaches to the light with magnets, so it doesn't get lost in a gear bin. When the power icon is green, use it to adjust floodlight brightness or switch between on and standby without walking back to the light.
USB-C Charging and IP65 Protection
The USB-C port sits under a rubber cover, and a full charge of the 3,000mAh battery takes about 4 hours. Dark Energy rates the light housing at IP65 when the port cover is fully closed. The rating doesn't cover the remote, so keep the remote dry.
Real-World Applications
Campsites. Raise the light beside the tent or table for area light while you cook, sort gear or sit around camp after dark.
Fishing and evenings outdoors. Stand the light near the water or your chair and use the remote to dim it or put it on standby without getting up.
Garage and vehicle work. Use the stand to light a work area, or unscrew the head, stick it to a steel surface with its magnetic base and point it where you're working.
Power outages at home. Set the Sentinel up in the living room for area light, then take the head with you as a flashlight when you need to check the rest of the house.
Practical Comparison
Sentinel Telescoping Light Versus a Tabletop Camp Lantern
A tabletop lantern lights the area around wherever you set it down, which is usually low. The Sentinel's telescoping stand lifts the light up to 75.6 in above the ground, and the head comes off as a flashlight, so you're carrying one light instead of a lantern plus a flashlight.
Floodlight Mode Versus Flashlight Mode
Use floodlight mode, up to 800 lumens in a warmer 4000K, to light a whole space. Use flashlight mode, up to 600 lumens in a cooler 6500K, to aim light at one spot. Both run about 20 hours on low.
Buyer Guidance
Setting It Up Safely
Only raise the light once it's on stable ground with the base fully spread. Lower the telescoping section before you move or inspect it, and don't extend it past its maximum height.
Charging and Care
Charge the Sentinel before you rely on it in the field. Keep the rubber cover over the USB-C port fully closed when you're not charging, and keep the housing, telescoping section and base clean and dry. Stop using the light if the housing, port cover, magnetic base or telescoping structure is damaged.
This May Be A Good Fit If
- You want light raised above camp, not sitting on a table
- You'd like a flashlight and an area light in one
- You want a remote to dim the light from your chair
- You'd rather charge over USB-C than buy batteries
Common Questions
How Do I Turn It Off Completely?
Long-press the power button. Standby is different: it leaves the unit on with no light showing, and the remote can switch the light from standby back on.
Is the Remote a Separate Item in the Box?
No. Dark Energy ships the remote attached to the light with its magnets, so it isn't a loose item in the package. Look for it on the light when you unpack.
What Warranty Does It Have?
Dark Energy covers the Sentinel with a 5-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. It covers manufacturer defects and performance issues not caused by misuse or external damage. Normal wear and tear and damage from misuse aren't covered.
