Refrigerator Battery Backup Keeps Your Food Cold Through Power Outages

Refrigerator battery backup keeps your fridge running through a power outage without a generator, a transfer switch or an electrician. It plugs in between the wall outlet and your refrigerator, passes grid power through while it is available and switches the fridge to battery power the moment the grid fails. Groceries, leftovers and baby formula stay cold whether you are home, asleep or away.

The Jackery FridgeGuard is built for this job. It stores 1,024Wh in LiFePO4 cells rated for 6,000 cycles, delivers 800W from its 120V outlet with a 1,600W peak for compressor starts, and switches over in about 10 milliseconds. At 2.6 inches thick, it fits beside, behind or on top of a refrigerator, stands on its included vertical stands or mounts on a wall with Jackery's bracket. Bypass Mode runs the fridge on wall power while the grid is up, so the battery stays full for the next outage.

Add the Jackery FridgeGuard Battery Pack to double your stored energy to 2,048Wh. The pack connects with one expansion cable and sits beside or stacks with the FridgeGuard. You can also choose the FridgeGuard + Battery Pack option on the FridgeGuard page to get both together.

How long a refrigerator battery backup lasts depends on your fridge, how often the door opens and how warm the room is. Jackery's example shows about 15 hours for a refrigerator on one FridgeGuard, and its Delay Start mode added up to 15% more runtime in Jackery's lab testing. Check that your refrigerator's startup power stays under 1,600W, and watch a few compressor starts before you rely on it.

Refrigerator Battery Backup FAQs

What is a refrigerator battery backup?

A refrigerator battery backup is a battery that sits between your wall outlet and your fridge and powers the fridge automatically when the grid goes down. The Jackery FridgeGuard does this with a built-in 1,024Wh LiFePO4 battery and an uninterruptible power supply that switches over in about 10 milliseconds. While the grid is up, it passes wall power through to the refrigerator and keeps its battery charged, so it is ready for the next outage without anyone starting a generator or moving a cord.

How long will a refrigerator battery backup run my fridge?

It depends on how much power your refrigerator uses, but Jackery's example shows about 15 hours for a refrigerator on one FridgeGuard. Runtime changes with the size and age of the fridge, how often the door opens and how warm the room is. Adding the FridgeGuard Battery Pack doubles the stored energy to 2,048Wh, and the FridgeGuard's Delay Start mode increased total runtime by up to 15% in Jackery's lab testing with a 4-hour delay.

Will a refrigerator battery backup start my refrigerator's compressor?

Yes, if the compressor's startup power stays within the backup's peak rating. A compressor can draw three to seven times its running watts for a moment when it starts. The Jackery FridgeGuard delivers 800W continuous and a 1,600W peak for about one second to cover that startup. Jackery recommends testing with your own refrigerator, since compressor age, room temperature and each brand's controls all affect the startup draw.

Do I need an electrician to install a refrigerator battery backup?

No. The Jackery FridgeGuard plugs into a standard 120V wall outlet, and your refrigerator plugs into the FridgeGuard, so there is no transfer switch or wiring. Stand it beside the fridge on its included vertical stands, set it on top, or mount it on a wood-stud or concrete wall with Jackery's mounting bracket, sold separately. Keep about 2 inches of clearance on both sides for airflow, and don't mount it on drywall alone.

Can I add more battery capacity later?

Yes. The Jackery FridgeGuard accepts one FridgeGuard Battery Pack, which adds 1,024Wh for a total of 2,048Wh. The pack connects to the FridgeGuard's DC expansion port with its included expansion cable, and the two units can sit side by side, stack or hang on the wall about 16 inches apart. The Battery Pack has no AC outlet of its own, so it works only together with the FridgeGuard.

Can a refrigerator battery backup charge from solar?

Yes, with the right accessory. The Jackery FridgeGuard and its Battery Pack recharge from a wall outlet, and with the Jackery DC Input Module, sold separately, they also accept up to 500W from Jackery solar panels with an open-circuit voltage between 16V and 60V, or charge from a 12V vehicle outlet with a car charging cable. That lets you refill the batteries during a longer outage when grid power isn't available.

How is a refrigerator battery backup different from a generator?

A refrigerator battery backup takes over on its own in about 10 milliseconds and runs quietly indoors with no fuel or exhaust, while a generator has to be started, run outdoors and refueled. A generator can run for days as long as it has fuel and can power more of your home. A refrigerator battery backup like the FridgeGuard covers one refrigerator through typical outages with no effort. For longer or larger outages, many homeowners pair battery backup with a generator or a whole-home system.
