Renogy RMS-LFPS battery monitoring screen with a blank LCD and a ring-lit power button

The Renogy Monitoring Screen for Smart Lithium Battery Series Reads Your Battery Bank Straight From the BMS, No Shunt Needed

The Renogy Monitoring Screen for Smart Lithium Battery Series, model RMS-LFPS, is a wall-mount meter with a backlit LCD. Instead of measuring current with a shunt, it communicates with the battery management system (BMS) of Renogy Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries. Renogy says this gives more accurate state of charge readings than traditional battery monitors.

It is for owners of Renogy Smart Lithium batteries in off-grid energy storage systems. It works with a single battery or a parallel bank, and it is made only for Renogy Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries.

Renogy Monitoring Screen for Smart Lithium Battery Series Features

Reads the BMS Directly

The screen gets battery bank information straight from the BMS for precise tracking and prediction. It shows present voltage, present current, capacity, state of charge, remaining time, a four-segment battery level and the number of paralleled batteries.

Plug and Play With No Shunt

Connect the screen to the battery's RS485 UP communication port with the included RJ45 cable. Renogy says no system configuration or calibration is needed and no shunt is required.

Warning Codes

The screen shows nine warning codes, 01 to 09, covering high and low temperature, over-voltage, under-voltage and over-current conditions. Renogy says this helps you spot abnormal conditions and improper operation early.

Battery Shelf Mode

Hold the power button for 3 seconds to switch the battery or bank to shelf mode and preserve power when it is not in use. Hold it for 1 second to switch back to active mode.

Parallel Bank Monitoring

With inter-battery communication enabled, the screen follows the charging and discharging of a parallel bank. Renogy says it reads banks of no more than 900Ah rated capacity.

Real-World Applications

Single battery. Mount the screen where you can read voltage, current and state of charge.

Parallel battery banks. See the average voltage and charge level of the bank on one screen.

RV, marine and cabin storage. Renogy lists RV, marine, camping, outdoor, cabin and truck uses.

Practical Comparison

BMS Monitoring Screen Versus Shunt Battery Monitor

A shunt monitor measures current flowing through a shunt in the battery circuit. This screen reads the BMS instead, so it needs no shunt. Renogy says to use a shunt-based monitor for non-Renogy batteries.

Buyer Guidance

Compatible Batteries Only

Renogy says the screen works with the Renogy 48V 50Ah Smart Lithium Battery, the 12V 100Ah Smart Lithium Battery with Self-Heating Function and the 12V 100Ah Smart Lithium Battery. It is not for other brands of lithium iron phosphate battery.

Indoor Mounting and Clearance

Renogy says to mount it in a clean, dry, protected indoor location, ideally at eye level. Leave at least 2 in (50 mm) behind it for the RJ45 cable bend. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, rain, snow or moisture.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You own Renogy Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries
  • You want state of charge from the BMS instead of a shunt
  • You run a parallel bank and want one display

Common Questions

Does It Work With Other Brands of Lithium Battery?

No. Renogy says it is only for the Renogy Smart Lithium Battery Series.

Does the Screen Stay On?

No. The backlight goes out after 15 to 25 seconds with no button press, and the screen then scrolls through voltage, current, capacity and state of charge.

Can I Wire Batteries in Series?

No. Renogy's manual says not to string these batteries in series because it can cause catastrophic failure.

What Warranty Does It Have?

Renogy lists a 1-year material and workmanship warranty.
