EG4 Chargeverter Plus 48V battery charger mounted on a living room wall

The EG4 Chargeverter Plus Charges 48V Lithium Batteries at Up to 100A From Grid or Generator Power

The EG4 Chargeverter Plus (model CU-48-5000-OD-01) is a UL 1012 certified AC to DC converter built to charge 48V lithium batteries in on-grid and off-grid energy storage systems. It delivers up to 5,120W and 100A at 240VAC, and it is designed to accept high-THD power from small generators or unstable grid power.

Its IP54 enclosure supports covered outdoor installation, it operates from -40°F to 131°F, and its dry contacts can start and stop a generator automatically at the voltage or state of charge you choose.

EG4 Chargeverter Plus Features

Up to 5,120W of Adjustable 48V Charging

Charge current is adjustable from 0 to 100A at 240VAC, 0 to 80A at 208VAC and 0 to 50A at 120VAC. Charge voltage is adjustable from 40 to 60VDC, so you can match the settings to your battery bank. Maximum output is 5,120W at 240VAC and 2,560W at 120VAC.

Built for Generator and Dirty Grid Power

Plug the Chargeverter Plus directly into a generator and charge your batteries without worrying about generator power quality. It accepts 90 to 264VAC at 50 or 60Hz, which lets small or budget generators and unstable grid power charge a 48V bank.

Automatic Generator Start With Warm-Up and Cool-Down

Normally open, normally closed and common dry contacts connect to a generator's two-wire start circuit. The charger can start the generator at a preset battery voltage or state of charge and stop it at a second threshold. Programmable warm-up and cool-down times (0 to 5 minutes of cool-down) let the generator run more gently.

Closed-Loop Battery Communication

A CAN/RS485 port (RJ45) lets the charger read state of charge from a compatible lithium battery and use it for your start and stop thresholds. Without closed-loop communication, it uses battery voltage instead.

IP54 Enclosure for Covered Outdoor Installation

The enclosure is rated IP54 for limited dust ingress and splashing water. It operates from -40°F to 131°F at altitudes up to 9,843 ft, so it can live in a garage, shed or covered exterior wall.

Built-In Breaker and LCD Display

A built-in breaker shuts off the charger output quickly. The LCD shows charging voltage, charging current, state of charge (when communication is connected) and the working status, such as Charging, Generator Preheat and Generator Cooling.

Real-World Applications

Generator backup for solar homes. Keep a 48V battery bank charged from a generator during storms, short winter days or long outages.

Off-grid cabins and shops. Use a generator as an automatic second charging source when solar production falls short.

Weak or unstable grid service. Condition rural or unreliable grid power into steady DC charging for your battery bank.

EG4 energy storage systems. Paired with an EG4 ESS, the Chargeverter Plus adds power conditioning and UPS functionality.

How It Compares to Common Alternatives

Versus feeding a generator into your inverter. Many inverters reject generator power with a poor waveform or unstable frequency. The Chargeverter Plus converts that AC into DC at the battery, so the inverter never has to accept the generator's power directly.

Versus a small battery charger. Many plug-in chargers deliver a fraction of the current. The Chargeverter Plus can deliver 100A at 240VAC and includes generator start control and battery communication.

Is the EG4 Chargeverter Plus the Right Fit

  • Battery. 48V lithium batteries with 15s or 16s cells, from 40 to 60VDC.
  • AC power. It comes with a NEMA L14-30P twist lock plug for a 240V/30A circuit. For 120V or 208V service, use a 30A receptacle and the correct plug, or the optional EG4 Chargeverter Power Cord 120V (sold separately), which runs from a standard 120V/15A outlet at up to 25A (1,425W) of charging.
  • Space. 16.1 x 7.1 x 4.3 in (W x D x H) and 13.67 lbs, wall mounted with 11.8 in above and below and 23.6 in on each side for airflow.
  • Battery cables. The included 4 AWG cables are rated for runs up to 15 ft.

This May Be a Good Fit If

  • You charge a 48V lithium bank from a generator
  • Your inverter struggles with generator or grid power quality
  • You want the generator to start and stop automatically
  • You need a charger that can mount in a covered outdoor location

Common Questions

Will It Work on 120V Power?

Yes. It accepts 120, 208 or 240VAC. On a 120V/30A circuit it can charge at up to 50A, but it needs a different plug than the included L14-30P. EG4 also sells an optional 120V power cord for a standard 15A outlet, limited to 25A of charging.

Can It Start My Generator Automatically?

Yes, if your generator has a two-wire start circuit. Connect it to the dry contacts and set start and stop thresholds by battery voltage or by state of charge.

Which Batteries Does It Work With?

EG4 lists 48V lithium batteries with 15s or 16s cells. State of charge control requires CAN or RS485 communication with the battery.

What Is the Warranty?

EG4 provides a 3-year warranty that applies only when the unit is installed indoors. Register it on EG4's warranty page.
