Generac Type I/II surge protector with three pre-wired leads, two black and one white, coming from its mounting nipple

The Generac Whole-House Surge Protection Device Helps Block Voltage Spikes From Lightning and Utility Switching

The Generac Whole-House Surge Protection Device (model G0074090, SKU 7409) is a surge protective device for 120/240 VAC single split-phase electrical systems. It blocks voltage transients from lightning and utility switching. It is rated Type 1 or Type 2.

It is not tied to one generator. You can install it on a service entrance, a branch panel or an individual equipment disconnect, indoors or outdoors. A licensed electrician should install it.

Generac Whole-House Surge Protection Device Features

50 kA Surge Current Per Phase

The device is rated for 50 kA of surge current per phase, with a nominal discharge current of 20 kA and a short circuit current rating of 200 kA. It protects line to neutral and line to line.

Thermally Protected MOVs

The device uses thermally protected metal oxide varistors. The connecting wires carry only transient currents, not your normal load.

LED Shows Protection Status

A green LED is lit while protection is active. If the LED goes out, protection is lost and the unit is not repairable, so it needs to be replaced.

Pre-Wired With 24 Inches of 12 AWG Wire

The leads for L1, L2 and neutral are 12 AWG and 24 inches long. A 1/2 inch nipple lets you mount it to a panel or with conduit.

NEMA 4X Enclosure and UL 1449 Listing

Generac's spec sheet lists a NEMA 4X enclosure, an operating range of -4 to 122 F (-20 to 50 C), and UL 1449 4th Edition listing. It is built for 5 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity and altitudes up to 6,500 ft.

Real-World Applications

Whole-House Protection. Install it at the service entrance so surges are handled where power enters the home.

Branch Panels. Add it to a distribution panel on the load side of a 20 A breaker to protect the circuits fed from that panel.

Individual Equipment. Mount it at an equipment disconnect when a specific machine needs its own surge protection.

Practical Comparison

Versus Plug-In Surge Strips. A strip protects only what is plugged into it. This device installs on your electrical system, so it can protect the circuits behind the panel or equipment it serves.

Versus No Surge Protection. Without a device, voltage spikes from lightning and switching go straight to your wiring and appliances.

Is the Surge Protection Device the Right Fit

  • Electrical system. It is for 120/240 VAC single split-phase systems, 50 or 60 Hz.
  • Installation. A licensed electrician should install it. For the Type 2 method, the leads go to a dedicated 2-pole 20 A breaker approved for the panel.
  • Generac transfer switches. Generac says field modification of any Generac Service Rated Transfer Switch to install a surge protection device is prohibited.
  • Not included. The 2-pole 20 A breaker is not included.

This May Be a Good Fit If

  • You have a 120/240 VAC single-phase home or panel
  • You want surge protection on a service entrance or branch panel
  • You have an electrician to install it

Common Questions

How Do I Know It Is Working?

Check the LED. If it is lit, protection is active. If it is off, protection is lost and the unit must be replaced.

Can I Install It Inside a Generac Transfer Switch?

No. Generac prohibits field modification of a Generac Service Rated Transfer Switch to add a surge protection device. Install it in a panel or with conduit as Generac describes.

What Is the Warranty?

Generac gives a 2-year warranty from delivery.
