Faraday Bags Keep Your Electronics Shielded From Wireless Signals And EMP

Faraday bags block the wireless signals your devices send and receive, and they help shield stored electronics from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Each bag in this collection is built with layers of shielding material that form a closed barrier around whatever is inside. Seal a phone in one and it can't connect to cell towers, GPS, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth until you take it out.

Every Faraday bag here comes from Faraday Defense. The Cordura Berry Compliant Jacket Bag comes in four sizes, from a 4.5 x 8 inch cell phone bag to a 14 x 16 inch laptop bag, with a 1000 denier CORDURA® outer shell and more than 85 dB of attenuation from 400 MHz to 40 GHz. The Cordura Utility Bag is a carry bag in small, medium and large sizes with a removable roll-top Faraday pouch, six interior slip pockets and room for laptops up to 17 inches in the large size. Both Cordura bags are made in the USA and are Berry Compliant.

To shield several devices at once, the NX3 EMP Kits include three to ten bags made of triple-layer CYBER fabric plated with nickel and copper, rated at 85 to 90 dB, with a double-fold Velcro seal. One NX3 kit pairs a 3-piece set with a Faraday Dry Bag Backpack. The NEST-Z EMP Kits include 3 to 40 heat-sealable bags in sizes from 2.5 x 4 to 18 x 28 inches. Each has five layers, including two aluminum shield layers, and is made for storing spare electronics against EMP, HEMP and CME events.

Choose a Faraday bag by the largest device you need to shield, and leave room to fold or seal the opening completely, since a gap lets signals through. Small bags suit phones, key fobs and cards. Tablet and laptop sizes fit larger gear and HAM radios. Multi-bag kits let you sort backup radios, flash drives and chargers into separate bags. To test a bag, seal a phone inside and call it. If the call doesn't ring through, the bag is blocking the signal.

Faraday bags protect devices you can unplug and store. Faraday Bags FAQs

What is a Faraday bag?

A Faraday bag is a pouch or bag lined with conductive shielding material that blocks radio signals from reaching the devices inside. It works on the same principle as a Faraday cage. Once a phone, key fob or laptop is sealed in, it can't send or receive cell, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or RFID signals. The Faraday bags in this collection also help shield stored electronics from the electromagnetic pulse of an EMP event.

Do Faraday bags protect electronics from an EMP?

Yes. A sealed Faraday bag helps protect the electronics inside from the electromagnetic energy of an EMP, as long as the device is fully enclosed and the opening is closed. Faraday Defense designs its NEST-Z EMP Kits for EMP, HEMP and CME events, with two aluminum shield layers and heat-sealable openings. A bag only protects what is stored inside it, so it suits spare radios, phones, flash drives and chargers, not equipment wired into your home.

What signals do Faraday bags block?

The Faraday bags here block cellular signals including 5G, plus GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and RFID. The Cordura Jacket Bag and Cordura Utility Bag are rated at more than 85 dB of attenuation from 400 MHz to 40 GHz, and the NX3 bags at 85 to 90 dB. In practical terms, a sealed phone can't be reached over a network or tracked by its location, and a key fob or contactless card can't be read.

How do I test a Faraday bag?

Seal your phone inside the bag and call it from another phone. If the call goes straight to voicemail, the bag is blocking the signal. You can also seal a keyless entry fob inside and try to unlock your car. If a call gets through or the car unlocks, check that the closure is fully folded or sealed, since even a small gap can let signals in, then test again.

What size Faraday bag do I need?

Choose a bag that fits your largest device with room to close the opening completely. For a phone, the 4.5 x 8 inch Cordura Jacket cell phone bag fits all major makes and models. Tablets fit the 7.5 x 10 or 9 x 12 inch Jacket bags, and the 14 x 16 inch laptop bag holds laptops and HAM radios. The large Cordura Utility Bag takes laptops up to 17 inches, drones and camera gear.

What is the difference between NX3 and NEST-Z EMP kits?

NX3 kits are fabric bags with a Velcro closure you can open and reseal every day, and NEST-Z kits are heat-sealable bags for storage. NX3 bags use three layers of CYBER fabric plated with nickel and copper, rated at 85 to 90 dB, and close with a double-fold Velcro seal. NEST-Z bags have five layers, including two aluminum shield layers and two static-dissipating polyester layers, are rated above 50 dB, and can be heat sealed to store spare electronics.

What does Berry Compliant mean for a Faraday bag?

Berry Compliant means the bag is made in the USA from U.S.-sourced materials, which meets the Department of Defense's Berry Amendment requirements. Both Cordura bags in this collection, the Berry Compliant Jacket Bag and the Cordura Utility Bag, carry this designation. It matters to government agencies, law enforcement and military buyers who must purchase Berry Compliant gear, and to anyone who wants a Faraday bag made from American materials.

Can I charge a device while it is inside a Faraday bag?

No. A device sealed in a Faraday bag can't connect to any network, and running a charging cable through the opening breaks the seal and lets signals in. Charge phones, radios and power banks before you store them, then check and top them up on a regular schedule. Phones drain their batteries faster while searching for a signal, so turn devices off before you seal them in.

Can a Faraday bag stop key fob relay theft?

Yes. Storing a keyless entry fob in a Faraday bag blocks the signal that relay thieves try to capture and boost to unlock and start a car. The Cordura Jacket cell phone bag and the smaller NX3 and NEST-Z bags fit key fobs, and the small Cordura Utility Bag holds fobs alongside phones and cards. Keep the bag fully sealed, and test it by trying to unlock your car with the fob inside.
