The Faraday Defense NEST-Z EMP Faraday Bag is a single large bag made from a 7.0 mil, five-layer moisture barrier film with two aluminum barrier shield layers. Faraday Defense designed NEST-Z to help protect electronics from the harmful electromagnetic radiation and electrical currents of an EMP, HEMP or CME. It is made in the USA, heat-sealable and suitable for vacuum packing.
Choose the XX-Large 18 x 28 in bag with a zip-lock closure, or the XXX-Large 34 x 40 in heat seal bag for bigger gear. Faraday describes NEST-Z for packaging and transporting high-value, sensitive electronic parts, military equipment and medical devices, and these two sizes take items that won't fit a phone or tablet bag.
The film has two heavy-gauge, static-dissipative polyester outer layers, two aluminum barrier shield layers and one more polyester layer for strength. Faraday says the aluminum layers provide a static-safe environment for sensitive electronic devices, while the polyester layers help keep sharp objects from puncturing the bag.
Faraday Defense rates NEST-Z film at greater than 40 dB of EMI attenuation from 1 to 10 GHz (MIL-PFR-81705-REV.D). Faraday says NEST-Z bags were tested to meet or exceed the electrical and physical requirements of ANSI/ESD S541 and are ANSI/ESD S20.20 compliant, with surface resistivity of 12 ohms per square inch.
The film is 7 mils (0.1778 mm) thick. Faraday lists 33 lb (133 N) puncture resistance, tensile strength of 11,500 PSI in the machine direction and 10,000 PSI in the transverse direction, and tear strength of 5.8 lb and 7.5 lb.
The 18 x 28 in bag closes with a zip-lock and can also be heat sealed. The 34 x 40 in bag is Faraday's heat seal version, and Faraday shows it without a zip-lock. Faraday's heat sealing conditions are 400°F (204°C) for 0.6 to 4.5 seconds at 30 to 70 PSI (206 to 482 kPa).
NEST-Z has a moisture vapor transmission rate under 0.006 grams per 100 square inches over 24 hours (ASTM F-1249). The film is RoHS compliant and lead-free.
Laptop storage. Faraday names the 18 x 28 in bag an XX-large laptop bag. Slide a laptop in, close the zip-lock for regular access or heat seal it for long-term storage.
Oversized gear. The 34 x 40 in bag gives you room for items that won't fit the 18 x 28 in bag, then seals shut along the open top.
Packaging and transport. Use either size to package sensitive electronic parts, where the static-dissipative layers and puncture resistance help.
The 18 x 28 in bag has a zip-lock, so you can open and close it without tools. The 34 x 40 in bag is much larger and relies on a heat seal, so it suits gear you plan to pack once and leave stored.
A plain plastic bag has no metal layer. NEST-Z adds two aluminum barrier shields, static-dissipative polyester, a rated EMI attenuation and a moisture barrier rating that a plain bag doesn't list.
Faraday lists the 18 x 28 in bag at 18.63 x 28.94 in (W x L) with a 0.35 in side seal. Measure your item with any case and leave room at the top for the closure. If it won't fit, the 34 x 40 in bag is the next step up.
Plan on a heat sealer for the 34 x 40 in bag. Faraday's conditions are 400°F (204°C) for 0.6 to 4.5 seconds at 30 to 70 PSI. Faraday also says NEST-Z is suitable for vacuum packing.
No. Faraday Defense says NEST-Z bags are for EMP, HEMP and CME protection only and do not provide shielding from cell signal, GPS or WiFi.
Faraday sells it as a heat seal bag and shows it without a zip-lock closure. The 18 x 28 in bag is the size with a zip-lock.
No. Faraday notes that the product is intended for commercial use and is not on the Qualified Product Listing under the Defense Standardization Program.
The XXX-Large option includes 1 NEST-Z 34 x 40 inch heat seal Faraday bag instead.
The Faraday Defense NEST-Z EMP Faraday Bag gives laptops and oversized gear a made in USA, 7.0 mil, five-layer shield with two aluminum layers and heat sealing. If you'd like help choosing between the 18 x 28 and 34 x 40 inch sizes, the Outbound Power team is happy to help.
