The Renogy 12V 60A DC to DC Battery Charger Charges Your House Battery From the Starter Battery at Up to 60A

The Renogy 12V 60A DC to DC Battery Charger is installed between a 12V starter battery and a 12V house battery. It delivers a rated 60A and 750W with a three-stage charge of bulk, absorption and float. It supports AGM, flooded, gel and lithium batteries.

It's made for RVs, commercial vehicles and boats that carry a second battery. The input and output are isolated, and the charger stays off until the engine runs, which helps protect the starter battery.

Renogy 12V 60A DC to DC Battery Charger Features

Starter Battery Protection With D+ Ignition

The D+ ignition terminal tells the charger when the engine is running. The charger won't power on or operate until the D+ wire is connected to an ignition circuit that sees 12V, so it doesn't drain the starter battery. The D+ cable isn't included, and Renogy recommends 18-16 AWG copper wire.

Traditional and Smart Alternators

Renogy says the charger works with smart or traditional alternator types. The manual shows how to find a live ignition source, such as an alternator IGN terminal or a fuse that is live only when the vehicle is running.

Three-Stage Charging for Lead-Acid and Lithium

Five DIP switches set the charge profile. For lead-acid batteries, you pick an absorption voltage of 14.1V, 14.4V or 14.7V and a float voltage of 13.2V, 13.5V or 13.8V. For lithium, there is no float stage, and you choose from 12.6V to 13.0V or 14.0V to 14.6V settings.

Lithium Activation

If a lithium battery's protection circuit has shut it off after over-discharge, the charger applies a small current to try to wake it. If it reaches a correct cell voltage, normal charging starts.

Isolated Input and Output

The input and output terminals are isolated, so the output voltage stays stable without interference from the input circuit. The two batteries can be different chemistries.

Protections, Fans and an Optional Current Limit

Protections include overvoltage, over temperature, reverse polarity and short circuit. Fans cool the unit. Connect the LC terminal to a 12V source to cut the current limit to 50%, or 30A for this model.

Real-World Applications

RV house batteries. Charge the house bank from the starter battery while the engine runs.

Boats. Renogy lists boats and yachts as uses. The manual says to have a qualified electrician or installer verify a boat installation.

Mixed-chemistry setups. Charge a lithium house battery from a lead-acid starter battery without matching the two.

Practical Comparison

DC to DC Charger Versus a Battery Isolator

An isolator separates two batteries but doesn't change the charge profile. This charger runs three-stage charging matched to your house battery type.

Full 60A Versus the LC Current Limit

By default the charger delivers its full 60A rating. Using the LC terminal, you can hold it to 30A when your alternator or wiring needs a lighter load.

Buyer Guidance

Cable and Fuse Sizing

For the 60A model, Renogy's manual lists 4 AWG cable on the starter input side and a fuse of about 90A, with 6 AWG on the house output side for up to 10 ft, 4 AWG for longer runs and a fuse of about 75A. The charger can draw up to 50% more current on the input side. Installers are responsible for correct cable and fuse sizes. Use 12V batteries only.

Placement

Mount it horizontally or vertically on a sturdy, level surface, as close to the house battery as you can. Leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of clearance on all sides, with ventilation. Keep it dry and away from heat sources.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You charge a 12V house battery from a starter battery
  • You use AGM, gel, flooded or lithium batteries
  • You can wire a D+ ignition signal
  • You want isolated input and output

Common Questions

Do I Have to Connect the D+ Ignition Cable?

Yes. The charger will not power on or operate until the D+ cable is connected.

Does It Work With 24V Batteries?

No. It needs 12V batteries, with the house battery above 10V for lead-acid and not above 15.5V.

Does It Include a Temperature Sensor?

No. The optional RTSDCC temperature sensor is sold separately, and it must not be used with lithium batteries.

What's Included

  • 1 x Renogy 60A DC to DC Battery Charger

Cables, fuses, the D+ ignition wire and the temperature sensor are not included.

Starter-to-House Charging for Your Second Battery

The Renogy 12V 60A DC to DC Battery Charger gives a house battery a managed three-stage charge from the starter battery. If you'd like help with cable, fuse and ignition wiring questions, the Outbound Power team is happy to help.
