The Renogy 36V/48V Rover Boost 10A MPPT Solar Charge Controller boosts the voltage of 12V or 24V solar panels so they can charge a 36V or 48V battery bank. Renogy built it for places with little room for solar, such as a golf cart roof, and designed it for charging from voltage typically found in one or two 36-cell solar modules.
It is made for owners of golf carts, electric vehicles, scooters and trikes who want to add solar to a high-voltage battery pack. It has presets for AGM, Gel, Flooded and Lithium batteries, a user mode, and a port for optional Bluetooth monitoring.
Charging a 36V or 48V bank normally calls for a solar panel voltage higher than the battery voltage. The Rover Boost raises the voltage of 12V or 24V panels, so one or two panels can do the job. Rated solar input is 500W for 36V systems and 650W for 48V systems.
Renogy lists tracking efficiency of at least 99% and charge conversion efficiency of at least 90%. Charging runs in four stages, Bulk, Boost, Float and Equalization, so the battery is charged quickly and then held safely.
Choose AGM/Sealed, Gel, Flooded or Lithium with the SET button. A user mode lets you set your own charging values. Matching the profile to your battery is your responsibility, and user errors are not covered by warranty.
Three LEDs for battery type, battery status and PV status show system information and flag errors.
Renogy lists battery overcharging, battery over discharge, battery reverse polarity, PV reverse polarity, PV reverse flow, PV short circuit, PV power limiting, controller internal over-temperature and charging over-current protections.
The RS485 port works with the Renogy BT-2 Bluetooth module, sold separately, so you can monitor the controller and change settings in the Renogy DC Home app. A CAN port supports paralleling two Rover Boost controllers on a smart lithium battery bank.
Golf carts. Renogy designed the Rover Boost for golf carts, where a roof panel can add charge to the battery pack.
Electric vehicles. Renogy lists electric vehicles and light strike vehicles among its uses, to help extend driving distance.
Scooters and trikes. Renogy lists scooters and trikes among the uses, where roof or body space for solar is small.
A standard controller needs a panel voltage higher than the battery voltage. The Rover Boost lets one or two 12V or 24V panels charge a 36V or 48V bank.
A PWM controller pulls the panel down to battery voltage. This MPPT controller tracks the panel's maximum power point and boosts the voltage.
The controller is only for 36V or 48V battery banks. Solar input voltage (Voc) must stay within 15 to 25 VDC for 36V and 15 to 40 VDC for 48V. When using two panels, connect them in parallel.
Renogy calls for a fast-acting fuse or circuit breaker of 15A to 20A, rated for the maximum battery voltage, on the battery cable close to the battery. Connect the battery first and the solar panels second. Renogy says to refer installation to qualified personnel. The controller is rated IP20, so mount it on a vertical surface protected from rain, snow and water, with at least 6 in (154 mm) of clearance above and below.
The Rover Boost raises the voltage from a 12V or 24V panel so it can charge a 36V or 48V bank. Panel voltage must stay within the input ranges for your system voltage.
Renogy says yes. Rated solar input is 500W for 36V batteries and 650W for 48V batteries, and the input voltage cannot go above 25 VDC for 36V or 40 VDC for 48V. Connect the panels in parallel.
No. Add the Renogy BT-2 Bluetooth module, sold separately, and use the Renogy DC Home app.
The Renogy 36V/48V Rover Boost 10A MPPT Solar Charge Controller brings solar charging to golf carts and other high-voltage battery banks without a large panel array. If you have questions about your setup, the Outbound Power team is happy to help.
