Renogy 40A DC-DC MPPT battery charger in black aluminum with attached wires, seen from the front

The Renogy 40A DC-DC Battery Charger with MPPT Charges Your 12V Battery From Your Alternator or Solar Panels

The Renogy 40A DC-DC Battery Charger with MPPT charges a 12V house battery from your vehicle's starter battery or from solar panels. It draws from one source at a time and switches between them. DC input from the vehicle is the default, and you can press the SELECT button to give solar priority.

It is made for RVs, SUVs and boats where space is tight. The charger measures 7.68 x 5.87 x 1.89 in and charges AGM, Gel, Flooded and LiFePO4 batteries. Its cables come already attached, and the front panel has LEDs and one button, so there is no screen to learn.

Renogy 40A DC-DC Battery Charger with MPPT Features

DC Input or Solar Input

The charger charges from the starter battery by default. Press SELECT to switch to solar priority. Renogy says the charger cannot charge from both sources at the same time. It switches automatically to the other source when the input voltage of the current source drops below its default threshold, so charging keeps going.

MPPT Solar Charging

Solar input accepts 10V to 30V DC. Renogy lists MPPT efficiency above 99% and charging efficiency of 93%, with a maximum output current of 40A and output power of 616W.

Four Battery Types

Choose AGM/Sealed, Gel, Flooded or LiFePO4 with the SELECT button. LEDs show the type you have chosen. The charger can also revive a lithium battery that has dropped to a low voltage.

Works With Traditional and Smart Alternators

Traditional alternators with 13.2 to 16 VDC output and smart alternators (Euro 6, 12 to 16 VDC) are both supported. For a smart alternator, connect the IGN cable, labeled ACC, to the vehicle ignition port.

Built-In Protections

Renogy lists input and output reverse polarity, input and output over-voltage, over-temperature, overcharging, over-discharging and charging timeout protection. It also lists BMS protection for LFP batteries.

Compact Mounting

The charger weighs 2.65 lb and is small enough to fit behind a seat or in a trunk. A heat sink handles cooling.

Real-World Applications

RVs. Charge the house battery from the engine while driving, or from rooftop solar when parked.

SUVs and overland rigs. Keep an auxiliary battery topped off from the vehicle or from a roof panel.

Boats. Renogy lists marine use, charging from the engine battery or solar.

Practical Comparison

40A Single Input Versus a Dual Input Charger

This charger uses one input at a time. Renogy's 30A and 50A chargers can charge from solar and the alternator at the same time. Choose this one if you only need either source at a given moment.

DC-DC Charger Versus a Basic Isolator

A basic isolator only joins batteries. This charger adds multi-stage charging, MPPT solar input and a battery-type setting.

Buyer Guidance

Fusing and Voltage

Renogy's spec table lists a 60A input fuse rating and a 50A output fuse rating. Solar input must stay within 10V to 30V DC. The charger works from a 12V system with 10V to 16V output.

Installation and Limits

The enclosure rating is IP31. Operating temperature is -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C), and storage temperature is -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). Renogy says the cables are labeled, so match each one to its label when you wire the charger.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You want to charge a 12V battery from your alternator or from solar
  • You need a small charger for an RV, SUV or boat
  • You charge AGM, Gel, Flooded or LiFePO4 batteries
  • You are fine with one input at a time

Common Questions

Can I Charge From Solar and the Alternator at the Same Time?

No. This charger uses one input at a time. Renogy's 30A and 50A models are the ones that charge from both together.

How Do I Choose Solar Priority?

The charger defaults to DC charging. Press the SELECT button on the side to give solar priority. Press it again to return to DC priority.

When Does It Switch Inputs by Itself?

With the engine running, it switches from DC to solar when the DC input is below 11.3V and solar input is above 13V. With the engine off, it switches to solar when the DC input is below 12.7V and solar input is above 13V.

Does It Work With a Smart Alternator?

Yes. Connect the IGN cable, labeled ACC, to the vehicle ignition port.
