The Renogy 500A Battery Monitor With Shunt Shows Voltage, Current and Capacity So You Know Your State of Charge at a Glance

The Renogy 500A Battery Monitor With Shunt is a precision battery monitor, also called a coulometer. It measures the voltage, current and capacity of your battery and shows them on a backlit LCD, so you can see the state of charge at any time. Renogy rates its voltage, current and capacity accuracy at ±1%.

It works with systems from 10V to 120V and up to 500A, and with lead acid (AGM, GEL), lithium iron phosphate, lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries. It suits RV, marine, off-grid and home battery banks, as well as mobile equipment such as e-bikes, motorcycles and electric wheelchairs.

Renogy 500A Battery Monitor With Shunt Features

Shunt Measurement Tracks Real Current

The monitor reads current through a 500A shunt placed in the negative circuit of your battery. Because all current to and from the battery passes through the shunt, the display follows real charge and discharge instead of estimating from voltage alone.

Backlit LCD With Six Readings

The green backlit LCD shows present capacity in Ah, capacity percentage, remaining time, present voltage, present current and present power. A charge and discharge indicator shows which way current is flowing, and the backlight brightness is adjustable for night use.

Programmable Low Capacity Alarm

You can set the effective battery capacity, full capacity voltage, zero capacity voltage, shutdown voltage and a low capacity alarm. Below the alarm level, the percentage and battery symbol flash and the buzzer sounds every 10 seconds, which helps you act before the battery is over-discharged.

20 ft Shielded Wire for Remote Mounting

The 20 ft (6 m) shielded wire connects the shunt to the display, so you can mount the screen away from the battery bank. The display fits in a rectangular panel cutout and locks in with tabs, and the transparent shunt holder makes mounting the shunt easier.

Low Power Draw and Memory

Standby draw is 1 to 2 mA. The monitor saves its last data when power is off.

Real-World Applications

RV and camper systems. Watch your house battery bank while you cook, charge and run lights, and see the remaining time on the screen.

Boats. Keep tabs on battery capacity while you are at anchor, with the display mounted at the helm or a panel up to 20 ft from the shunt.

Solar and off-grid systems. Put the shunt in the negative line of the battery bank to see charge current from your panels and the draw from your loads.

Practical Comparison

Battery Monitor With Shunt Versus Voltmeter

A voltmeter shows only voltage. This monitor also measures current through the shunt and tracks capacity, so you see percentage, amp-hours and remaining time.

Battery Monitor Versus Bluetooth Module

Renogy suggests the monitor for anyone without a smartphone, or who does not mind staying close to the system. A Bluetooth module suits people who want to check their system from a phone or tablet.

Buyer Guidance

Wiring and Setup

Connect the shunt in series with the negative circuit only, never the positive. The shunt B- goes to the battery negative, and P- goes to the output and charge negative. Run a 0.3 to 0.75 mm² wire from the battery positive to B+ on the shunt. Then connect the shielded wire to the display. Disconnect the battery negative before installing, and use fuses or circuit breakers on loads.

Set the Battery Capacity First

The default capacity is 100Ah. Set it to your battery bank's actual effective capacity before first use, or the percentage will be wrong. Do not set the full and zero voltages unless you know your battery's voltage characteristics.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You want to see state of charge, current and remaining time on a screen
  • Your system runs between 10V and 120V and up to 500A
  • You want to mount the display up to 20 ft from the battery

Common Questions

Which Batteries Does It Work With?

Renogy lists lead acid (AGM, GEL), lithium iron phosphate, lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries from 10V to 120V.

Can I Monitor More Than Two Batteries?

Yes. Renogy says to follow the wiring instructions carefully when you connect the system.

Can I Leave It in Direct Sun?

No. Renogy says not to expose the monitor to long periods of sun or strong ultraviolet light, or to use or store it below -10°C (14°F) or above 60°C (140°F), because this shortens the life of the LCD.

What Warranty Does It Have?

Renogy lists a 2-year material and workmanship warranty.
