The Renogy DCC50S 12V 50A Dual Input DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT Charges Your House Battery From Solar and Your Alternator at Up to 50A

The Renogy DCC50S 12V 50A Dual Input DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT charges a 12V house battery from two inputs. One connects to your starter battery and alternator. The other connects directly to solar panels. Built-in MPPT tracking gets more from the panels, and a built-in voltage sensitive relay keeps the starter battery and house battery isolated.

It is made for fifth wheels, RVs, trucks, SUVs and boats that need to charge a service battery while driving or parked in the sun. It charges Flooded, Gel, AGM and Lithium batteries. Choose the charger alone, with a Bluetooth module, or with a Bluetooth module and a Renogy ONE Core.

Renogy DCC50S 12V 50A Dual Input DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT Features

Two Charging Inputs in One Unit

Your vehicle's alternator normally serves the starter battery first. This charger lets your solar system charge the house battery first, and it can switch to the starter battery when sunlight is low. Maximum solar input is 50V and 660W, and maximum alternator input is 660W.

MPPT Tracking With 3-Stage Charging

Renogy lists MPPT tracking efficiency up to 99% and charging efficiency up to 97%. Bulk, Boost and Float stages bring the battery to full charge, and equalization is available for select battery types. Charging current is adjustable from 10A to 50A.

Works With Traditional and Smart Alternators

Traditional alternators with 13.2 to 16 VDC output work with the built-in voltage sensitive relay. For a smart alternator (Euro 6, 12 to 16 VDC), connect the included IGN signal wire to the vehicle ignition port.

Protection and Heat Dissipation

Renogy lists battery isolation, over-voltage, battery temperature, over-current, overheat, reverse current and reverse polarity protection. A soft start circuit raises input voltage gradually.

One Terminal Layout for Every Connection

A common negative terminal brings the solar, starter battery and house battery connections together.

Monitoring Options

An RS485 port connects to the Renogy BT-2 Bluetooth module, so you can monitor and adjust the charger in the Renogy DC Home app. Renogy also lists the DCC50S as compatible with the Renogy ONE Core through the BT-2 module.

Real-World Applications

Fifth wheels and RVs. Charge the house battery on the road and from rooftop solar at camp.

Trucks and 4x4 SUVs. Charge a service battery from the alternator while driving.

Boats. Renogy lists marine as a use.

Practical Comparison

DCC50S Versus a Basic Isolator Relay

A basic isolator only joins batteries. This charger adds MPPT solar input and multi-stage charging.

Charger Only Versus Bluetooth and ONE Core Packages

The charger alone has no display, only LED indicators. The Bluetooth package adds a BT-2 module for phone monitoring. The ONE Core package adds a Renogy ONE Core.

Buyer Guidance

Solar and Alternator Limits

Renogy says the working voltage of the solar array must not exceed 50V, and solar power and alternator power must each stay within 660W. Renogy pairs the 50A charger with a 75A to 100A alternator.

Fusing and Installation

Renogy recommends fuses on both input and output sides, on the positive side of the circuit. The manual lists a 75 to 100A fuse from the starter battery to the charger. Renogy's fuse sheet lists a 60A fuse from the house battery to the charger and a 6 AWG wire for the output terminal, 1 to 5 m long. Mount the charger indoors on a vertical surface, with at least 6 in (150 mm) of clearance above and below. Renogy recommends qualified personnel for installation.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You want to charge a house battery from both an alternator and solar
  • You use a 12V system with Flooded, Gel, AGM or Lithium batteries

Common Questions

What Alternators Does It Work With?

Both traditional and smart alternators. With a smart alternator, connect the IGN signal wire to the ignition port.

What Happens When the House Battery Is Full?

The built-in voltage sensitive relay lets the charger trickle charge the house battery to keep it full. It can also trickle charge the starter battery from the solar panels, and it keeps the two batteries isolated.

How Do I Set the Battery Type Without a Display?

Press the battery type button on the PV+ and ALT+ side of the charger. Each press changes the LED color, and each color stands for one battery type.
