The Renogy REGO 12V 60A DC-DC Battery Charger Charges Your House Battery From the Starter Battery While You Drive

The Renogy REGO 12V 60A DC-DC Battery Charger moves power from your vehicle's starter battery to your house battery at up to 60A. Once the house battery is full, it recharges and maintains the starter battery. It works with smart and traditional alternators.

It is made for recreational vehicles, commercial vehicles, boats, yachts and vans. It handles AGM, sealed lead acid, flooded, gel and lithium batteries.

Renogy REGO 12V 60A DC-DC Battery Charger Features

Bidirectional Charging Keeps Both Batteries Ready

While you drive, the charger fills the house battery from the starter battery. When the house battery is full, it switches to charging and maintaining the starter battery. Renogy says this keeps you from getting stranded by a drained starter battery.

Anderson PP75 Terminals Simplify Connection

The input and output use Anderson PP75 terminals instead of ring terminals, and the terminals accept 8 AWG to 6 AWG cable.

Four-Stage Charging With a Battery Type Knob

The charger uses Bulk, Boost, Float and Equalization stages. A knob on the front selects AGM, gel, flooded, lithium or USER.

Bluetooth Monitoring From the Renogy DC Home App

The charger has no screen. Built-in Bluetooth lets you view starter and house battery voltage and charging current in the Renogy DC Home app. Turn the knob to USER to set the boost voltage, float voltage, boost duration or charging current.

Temperature Compensation and Built-In Protections

The included temperature sensor adjusts charge voltage by -3mV per °C per 2V for non-lithium batteries. Renogy says not to use it on a lithium battery with a battery management system. Protections include surge, short circuit, reverse polarity, overvoltage, overcurrent, open circuit and over temperature.

Real-World Applications

Recreational vehicles. Charge a house battery bank on the road.

Vans and commercial vehicles. Keep an auxiliary battery topped up for equipment while the engine runs.

Boats and yachts. Charge a house battery from the starter battery. Renogy recommends a qualified electrician install it on a boat.

Practical Comparison

Bidirectional Versus One-Way DC-DC Charging

A one-way charger only sends power to the house battery. The Renogy REGO 12V 60A DC-DC Battery Charger also recharges and maintains the starter battery once the house battery is full.

Charger Alone Versus Charger With 10 Ft 6 AWG Cable

Both options include the same charger. The cable option adds a 10 ft 6 AWG cable for connecting your batteries. Renogy's manual lists 6 AWG for input runs up to 20 ft and 8 AWG for output runs up to 10 ft.

Buyer Guidance

Alternator and Wiring

Renogy advises an alternator that can output at least 90A to 120A, which is 1.5 to 2 times the charger's rating. The charger draws no more than 70A from the alternator. Renogy recommends a 90A fuse on the input and an 80A fuse on the output. Smart alternators need the IGN signal wire connected.

Installation

Mount it on a vertical surface indoors, away from sunlight, heat and water, with at least 6 in of clearance above and below. Never install it in a sealed enclosure with flooded batteries. Renogy says installation may need electrical knowledge and recommends qualified personnel.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You want your house battery charged from the starter battery while driving
  • You have a 12V system with a battery pack that stays at or under 16V
  • You use AGM, sealed lead acid, flooded, gel or lithium batteries
  • You want to check charging status from your phone

Common Questions

How Do I Check What the Charger Is Doing?

The charger has no display. Use the Renogy DC Home app over Bluetooth to see battery voltage and charging current. Battery and Fault lights on the charger also show status.

Can I Customize the Charging Settings?

Yes. Turn the knob to USER and connect with the Renogy DC Home app. You can set the boost voltage, float voltage, boost duration and charging current to match your battery.

Can I Run Two Chargers Together?

Renogy says two of these chargers can be connected in parallel to draw from the starter battery and a 12V DC generator while charging the same house battery. The generator's current should be at least 90A.

Does It Work With Lithium Batteries?

Yes. Set the knob to LI. The temperature sensor is not compatible with lithium batteries.
