The Renogy Rover Li 30A MPPT Solar Charge Controller Handles Up to 800W of Solar on a 24V Battery

The Renogy Rover Li 30A MPPT Solar Charge Controller is a 30 A controller for 12V and 24V off-grid systems. It detects the system voltage for non-lithium batteries, supports lithium batteries with a manual voltage setting, and has a load output for small DC devices.

Renogy rates it for up to 400 W of solar on a 12V battery and 800 W on a 24V battery. It suits mid-size RV, van and cabin arrays.

Renogy Rover Li 30A MPPT Solar Charge Controller Features

Automatic 12V and 24V Detection

The controller detects a 12V or 24V system on its own when you connect a non-lithium battery. For lithium, you set the voltage by hand. AGM, sealed, flooded, gel, lithium and user-defined battery types are supported.

Bluetooth Monitoring Through the RS485 Port

The RS485 port works with the Renogy BT-2 Bluetooth module, which pairs with the Renogy DC Home app for live data and settings changes on your phone. The BT-2 comes with one option. The Controller Only option leaves it out.

MPPT Tracking Above 99%

MPPT tracking follows the array's maximum power point throughout the day. Renogy rates tracking efficiency above 99% and conversion efficiency up to 98%.

Four-Stage Charging and Lithium Activation

Lead-acid batteries get bulk, boost and float charging, with equalization available. Lithium batteries get bulk and boost. When a lithium battery has been shut down by its own protection, the controller can send a small current to wake it.

DC Load Terminals With Timer Control

The load terminals power a DC load of 20 A or less. Renogy lists Auto On/Off, Timer, Manual, Test and Always On modes.

Protection and Heat Control

Protection covers reverse polarity, overcharging, over-discharging, overload, short circuit and reverse current. The included temperature sensor adjusts charging to battery temperature.

Real-World Applications

RVs and vans. Charge a 12V or 24V house bank from a larger rooftop array and power a DC load from the controller.

Cabins and sheds. Run a 24V battery bank from up to 800 W of panels.

Boats and camping setups. Charge a house battery on a boat or camping rig.

Practical Comparison

Rover Li 30A Versus a PWM Controller

A PWM controller passes panel output straight to the battery, so panel and battery voltage must line up. An MPPT controller steps panel voltage down and raises charge current.

Controller Only Versus With Bluetooth Module

The controller, temperature sensor and brackets are the same in both options. Choose the Bluetooth option if you want the BT-2 module and DC Home app monitoring now, or Controller Only if you plan to add a module later.

Buyer Guidance

Match the Array to the Controller

Stay within the solar input limits Renogy lists. Check your string's open circuit voltage (Voc) against the 100 V limit before wiring, and connect the battery before the solar panels.

Fuses and Wire Size

For the battery fuse, Renogy's manual recommends 30 A to 40 A for this model. Renogy recommends a solar panel fuse sized at the array's total amps times 1.56. The manual recommends 10 AWG for runs of 0 to 10 ft, 8 AWG to 10 AWG for 11 to 20 ft and 8 AWG for 21 to 30 ft, on both solar input and battery output. Fuses on both the input and output sides are recommended.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You need more than a 20 A controller can offer
  • You want a DC load output with timer control
  • You use lithium batteries and want a wake-up function
  • You want optional Bluetooth monitoring in the DC Home app

Common Questions

Does It Detect 24V Lithium Batteries Automatically?

No. Automatic detection applies to non-lithium batteries. For lithium, set the battery type to Li and set the nominal voltage yourself. Renogy says lithium activation needs at least 16 V of solar input on a 12V system and at least 30 V on a 24V system.

Does It Come With a Bluetooth Module?

Only with the Bluetooth option, which includes the Renogy BT-2 module for the RS485 port. The Controller Only option does not include one.

How Many Watts of Solar Can It Handle?

Renogy rates the maximum combined solar input at 400 W for a 12V battery system and 800 W for a 24V system, with panel voltage up to 100 V.
