The Renogy Wanderer 10A PWM Charge Controller is a compact 10 A PWM controller for small off-grid solar systems. It detects 12V and 24V systems for non-lithium batteries and works with sealed (AGM), gel, flooded and lithium iron phosphate batteries.
It is made for small panels and small battery banks on trailers, RVs, boats, cabins and garden projects. It also has a USB port for charging a phone or other small device straight from the controller.
Connect a non-lithium battery and the controller recognizes whether it is 12V or 24V. Lithium batteries are set by hand in the menu, where you choose the nominal voltage and the charge voltage in 0.2 V steps.
The controller charges in bulk, boost, float and equalization stages. Equalization is meant only for flooded batteries, and Renogy says not to equalize AGM, gel or lithium batteries unless the battery maker allows it.
The built-in USB port supplies 5 V at up to 2 A, so you can charge a phone or other portable device without a separate adapter.
The load terminals power simple DC devices such as lights and fans, with a limit of 10 A. Modes include automatic on at night, timed operation from 1 to 14 hours, manual, test and 24-hour operation.
If a lithium battery has shut itself off from over-discharge, the controller applies a small charge current to wake its protection circuit. If a correct cell voltage is reached, normal charging starts.
Protection covers overcharging, over-current, short circuit and reverse polarity. Renogy lists self-consumption under 10 mA and a back-lit LCD that shows system status, load control and error codes.
RVs and trailers. Keep a 12V battery charged from a roof panel and charge a phone from the USB port.
Cabins and sheds. Run lights or a fan from the load terminals on a timer.
Boats, fences and gardens. Renogy lists these uses for solar lighting and small DC projects.
A PWM controller passes panel output to the battery in pulses, so panel voltage should suit the battery. An MPPT controller can accept higher panel voltage.
A controller stops overcharging, protects against reverse polarity and runs the charge stages. Direct connection does none of that.
Renogy rates maximum solar input at 130 W on a 12V battery and 260 W on a 24V battery. Keep series strings under 50 VDC open circuit voltage (Voc) and panel short circuit current under 10 A. Connect the battery before the solar panel.
Terminals take wire up to 12 AWG. Renogy's manual sets the controller-to-battery fuse at the controller's current rating, here 10 A. Mount it indoors on a vertical surface with 6 inches (150 mm) of clearance above and below, and never in a sealed enclosure with flooded batteries.
No. Renogy's manual says to use only simple electronics on the load terminals and not to connect inverters, battery chargers or other high-amp devices.
No. The controller has an RS232 port, and Renogy shows the BT-1 module as an optional accessory sold separately.
Hold ENTER on the battery voltage screen, choose Lithium, confirm the 12V or 24V nominal voltage, then pick the charge voltage and hold ENTER to confirm.
Renogy lists a 2-year material and workmanship warranty.
The Renogy Wanderer 10A PWM Charge Controller brings four-stage charging, load control and USB power to small 12V and 24V systems. Questions about sizing your panel or battery? The Outbound Power team is happy to help.
