The Renogy Wanderer Li 30A PWM Charge Controller is a 30 A negative ground PWM controller for 12V off-grid systems. It charges sealed, gel, flooded and lithium batteries, and it can wake a lithium battery that has shut itself off.
It is made for small to mid-size 12V systems on RVs, trailers, boats and cabins. There is no menu to learn. You press one button to choose the battery type, and LED lights show the charging status.
Hold the gray button for about 7 seconds until the LED flashes, then press it again to choose the type. Green is sealed, orange is gel, red is flooded and blue is lithium. When the flashing stops, the setting is saved.
Lithium mode is programmed by default for a 12.8V lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. For other lithium types, set the parameters to the battery maker's advice using the Renogy BT app. If a lithium battery has gone to sleep from over-discharge, the controller applies a small current to activate its protection circuit and starts normal charging once cell voltage is reached.
The controller charges in bulk, boost, float and equalization stages. Boost lasts 120 minutes. Equalization applies only to flooded batteries, runs every 28 days for 2 hours, and is not used for AGM, gel or lithium batteries.
PV and battery LEDs show whether the panel is charging, the battery is in float, or there is an over-voltage, under-voltage, over-discharge or over-heating condition. The controller shuts down on its own if it overheats and resumes when the temperature changes.
The RS232 port works with the Renogy BT-1 Bluetooth module for phone monitoring. A remote temperature sensor port supports temperature compensation. Both the BT-1 and the temperature sensor are sold separately.
RVs and trailers. Keep a 12V lithium or AGM house battery charged from a roof panel.
Boats. Charge a 12V battery from a small solar array.
Cabins. Charge a 12V bank that runs lights and small loads.
A PWM controller passes panel output to the battery in pulses, so panel voltage must suit a 12V battery. This controller accepts up to 25 VDC at the panel input. An MPPT controller can accept higher panel voltage.
Renogy's table lists a 14.2 V boost voltage for gel and lithium and 14.6 V for sealed and flooded. Lithium mode has no float stage and no equalization.
Keep your array's open circuit voltage (Voc) under 25 VDC. Connect the battery before the solar panel, because the controller needs a stable power source.
Renogy's manual sets the controller-to-battery fuse at the controller's current rating, which is 30 A here. The maximum terminal size is 8 AWG (10 mm2). Mount it indoors on a vertical surface with 6 inches (150 mm) of clearance above and below. The controller ships without mounting screws.
