Stainless steel BougeRV 5kW diesel heater on a white background with handles, fuel cap and air outlet

The BougeRV Portable Diesel Outdoor Heater Puts Out Up to 5kW of Ducted Warm Air From a 12V Stainless Steel Unit You Can Carry

The BougeRV Portable Diesel Outdoor Heater is a self-contained 5kW diesel heater with its own fuel tank, a 304 stainless steel shell and two steel carry handles. It runs on 12V power, burns 0.18 to 0.53 L of diesel per hour and weighs 22 lbs. An LCD panel sets the power level and timer.

BougeRV built it for camping, overlanding, ice fishing, road trips and other cold-weather outings. It's designed for outdoor use: the heater sits in a well-ventilated outdoor area so exhaust gases disperse away from tents and living spaces.

BougeRV Portable Diesel Outdoor Heater Features

Up to 5kW With Adjustable Output

Turn the power knob to set heat output from P1.4kW to P5.0kW, and the heater holds that level once you've chosen it. BougeRV says it can warm a 307 cubic foot tent in as little as 8 minutes under suitable conditions, and that actual warm-up time depends on the enclosed space, insulation, starting temperature, outdoor conditions and heater setting.

Low Diesel Consumption

The heater uses about 0.18 to 0.53 L of diesel per hour, depending on the heating level and operating conditions. Lower settings use less fuel when you don't need full output. A sight glass on the side shows the fuel level.

Three Ways to Power It

Three power cables come in the box: a 110-240V AC power cord with an AC-DC adapter, a 150 cm XT60 car adapter cable for a 12V socket and a 150 cm positive/negative cord with ring terminals for a battery. Starting power is 150W, operating power is 10 to 60W, and once lit the heater draws 5 to 6A.

Ducted Warm Air

The 75 mm hot air outlet takes the included 150 cm air outlet pipe and vent outlet, which ship pre-assembled, along with an air duct adapter and a stainless steel hose clamp. The exhaust muffler plugs into the exhaust port at the bottom of the heater.

Control Panel With Timer

The LCD panel shows fuel pump, air blower, ignition and heater status along with power level, voltage and the clock. You can set a single heating period or several hourly periods across a 24-hour schedule. BougeRV's photos also show power and timing control in the BougeRV app.

Built-In Protections

Overheat, voltage and short-circuit protection are built in. Error codes appear on the screen with a buzzer, and the manual explains each one. Anti-vibration rubber feet keep the heater steady, and BougeRV lists operating noise under 70dB.

Real-World Applications

Cold-weather camping. Set the heater up outdoors where its exhaust disperses away from your tent and living spaces, and use the timer to schedule heating periods.

Overlanding and road trips. Power it from your vehicle's 12V socket with the XT60 car adapter cable or from a battery with the ring-terminal cord.

Ice fishing. BougeRV lists ice fishing among its uses. Follow the same outdoor placement, exhaust and ventilation rules.

Off-grid power. Run it from a portable power source that meets its 150W starting requirement. BougeRV names the JuiceGo 240Wh and B277 Power Station as able to start it.

Practical Comparison

Heater Only Versus Heater With a Power Source

Choose the heater alone if you already have a 12V power source that can supply at least 15A at startup. The Heater + 266Wh Battery and Heater + JuiceGo Power options add a BougeRV power source so you can run it away from your vehicle.

Portable Heater Versus an Installed Diesel Heater

An installed heater is mounted in one vehicle. This one carries its own fuel tank, handles, cables and ducting, so it moves with you between campsites and vehicles.

Buyer Guidance

Where to Run It

BougeRV labels this an outdoor heater. Place it in a well-ventilated outdoor area, keep the silencer or exhaust pipe outdoors and keep all pipes open. Do not use it in enclosed or unventilated spaces. BougeRV warns never to run the heater indoors or in enclosed spaces with only the muffler installed, because carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and deadly. Its manual says indoor operation, such as in an RV, trailer or garage, requires an extended exhaust pipe (sold separately) that routes all exhaust completely outdoors, and that pipe is not included.

The muffler and exhaust system can reach 482°F (250°C). Keep them and the heat outlets away from children, pets and flammable materials, keep the exhaust away from lawns, wooden decks and plastic tarps, and leave 12 in (30 cm) of clearance at the air intake. Do not use the heater near flammable vapors or dust, or in high humidity. BougeRV lists an operating altitude of 1000 to 3000 m.

Power, Fuel and Shutdown

Use a power supply rated for at least 15A at startup. BougeRV notes that many power station car sockets are rated 12V/10A (120W), which isn't enough to start the heater. On first use, the fuel line needs to fill with diesel before the heater will ignite. Turn the heater off before refueling. To shut down, hold the power knob for more than 3 seconds, then wait 3 to 5 minutes for the cooling cycle to finish before disconnecting power.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • You want diesel heat for cold-weather camping
  • You can set the heater up outdoors
  • You have a 12V source that supplies 15A at startup
  • You want a timer and adjustable output

Common Questions

How Much Electricity Does It Use?

About 10 to 60W in normal operation, with up to 150W at startup.

Can I Run It From a Portable Power Station?

Yes, if the port can deliver the 150W starting power. When you use the XT60 car adapter cable, BougeRV's manual says the outlet should support at least 15A. BougeRV names the JuiceGo 240Wh and B277 Power Station as compatible.

Why Does It Show E1 the First Time?

The fuel line must fill with diesel before the first ignition. If E1 appears at first, restart the heater.

What Warranty Does It Have?

BougeRV lists a 2-year warranty.
