The DuroMax XP5500HX Dual Fuel Portable HX Generator is a compact, all-metal generator built to keep your home essentials, campsite or job site running. It produces 4,500 running watts and 5,500 peak watts on gasoline, or 4,275 running and 5,225 peak watts on propane, from a 210cc DuroMax OHV engine.
The XP5500HX is part of the DuroMax HX series, so it includes CO Alert, which shuts the engine down automatically if carbon monoxide builds to unsafe levels. A rocker-switch electric start with recoil backup, a 120/240V power panel with an L14-30R outlet and a 5-year DuroMax warranty make it a practical step up from basic open-frame generators.
The XP5500HX runs on either fuel, so you can use whatever is available or store propane for long periods without fuel going stale. A 4-foot propane hose and regulator are included, and DuroMax suggests a 20 lb propane tank or larger.
A built-in carbon monoxide sensor monitors the air around the generator and shuts it down automatically if CO levels become dangerous. It is an added layer of protection, not a replacement for running the generator outdoors and away from doors, windows and vents.
The panel includes two 120V 5-20R GFCI household outlets, a 30A L14-30R twist-lock outlet for 120/240V loads or a transfer switch, plus a USB-A and a USB-C port for phones and small devices. A digital meter shows voltage, frequency and run hours.
Start the engine with the rocker switch using the included 12V battery, or use the recoil cord as a backup. Automatic low-oil shutdown protects the engine if the oil level drops.
DuroMax rates the XP5500HX for about 19 hours at 25% load and 9 hours at 50% load on gasoline. On propane, expect about 15 hours at 25% load and 8 hours at 50% load.
An all-metal frame and power panel, 100% copper windings, an automatic voltage regulator, a cast iron cylinder sleeve and metal-hub 8-inch wheels are built for years of use. The generator weighs 128 lbs dry.
Home essentials during outages. Keep a refrigerator, freezer, sump pump, lights and phone chargers running. With a properly installed transfer switch, the L14-30R outlet can feed selected household circuits.
Camping and tailgating. The compact frame and wheel kit make it easy to bring along for lights, fans, cooking appliances and electronics.
Job sites and workshops. Run saws, compressors, chargers and work lights where no outlet is available.
Food trucks and vendors. Dual fuel lets you run on propane you may already carry for cooking equipment.
Versus gasoline-only generators of the same size. Propane stores for long periods without going stale, and the XP5500HX lets you switch between fuels as availability changes.
Versus inverter generators. The XP5500HX costs less per watt and offers a 240V twist-lock outlet, while inverter generators such as the DuroMax XP7000iH run quieter, with cleaner power for sensitive electronics.
Versus larger 10,000W+ generators. It will not power central air or a whole house, but it is lighter, easier to move and uses less fuel.
