The Faraday Defense Broadband EMP Ferrite Snaps Around a Cable to Help Suppress Pulse Energy Before It Reaches Plugged-In Electronics

A Faraday Defense Broadband EMP Ferrite is a clip-on ferrite that closes around the cable feeding a sensitive device. Ferrites are ceramic compounds made of a mixed oxide of iron and one or more other metals, and they have long been used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from conductive transients. Faraday says its broadband ferrites provide broadband protection exceeding 1 GHz and suppress energy from a broadband pulse, like that of an EMP.

It's for anyone protecting equipment that has to stay plugged in, such as solar panels, charge controllers, generators, computers or amateur radios. Choose from six inner diameters, 0.2, 0.28, 0.39, 0.51, 0.72 and 1 in, to fit the cable you're protecting.

Broadband EMP Ferrite Features

Broadband Protection Beyond 1 GHz

Faraday rates these ferrites for broadband protection exceeding 1 GHz. Faraday designed them to suppress energy from a broadband pulse, like that of an EMP, on the cable feeding your equipment.

Snap-On Installation

There's nothing to cut or wire. The hinged housing opens, closes around the cable feeding the sensitive item and snaps shut. That's the whole install.

Six Inner Diameters

The ferrite comes in 0.2, 0.28, 0.39, 0.51, 0.72 and 1 in inner diameters, so you can match it to a thin device cord or a thicker cable or wire bundle.

Loop the Cable for More Suppression

Faraday notes that looping the cable through the ferrite helps further reduce the transient. A size with room for the extra pass makes that easier.

Real-World Applications

Home electronics. Clip a ferrite around the power cord of a computer, TV or other small appliance.

Solar power systems. Use them on solar power generation wires and on the cables to charge controllers.

Generators and radios. Add a ferrite to the cables of a generator or an amateur radio that needs to stay connected.

Vehicles. Faraday says broadband ferrites can even be used on some automobile wiring.

Practical Comparison

Broadband Ferrite Versus a High-Saturation Ferrite

Broadband ferrites clip around wire bundles and power cords. Faraday points to high-saturation ferrites instead when high current flows through the wires and you can't reach the wire ends or a broadband ferrite isn't large enough to fit around the wire bundle, or when a solid, non-hinging ferrite is preferred. High-saturation ferrites clip around individual high-current wires.

Broadband Ferrite Versus a Toroid Ferrite

A toroid ferrite goes on by feeding the wire bundle through it, for example by disconnecting battery leads, threading them through and reattaching them. A broadband ferrite opens on a hinge and snaps around a cable that's already connected, so you don't have to touch the wire ends.

Buyer Guidance

Choosing a Size

Pick an inner diameter that will clip around your cable. Faraday's rule is simple: too large is okay, but not too small. Measure the outside of the cable, choose the next size up and allow extra room if you plan to loop it through.

How Many to Buy

Plan one ferrite for each cable or wire bundle that feeds the equipment you want to protect, sized to fit it.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • Your equipment has to stay plugged in
  • You want protection that simply clips on
  • You're protecting cords for computers, TVs or radios
  • You run solar, a charge controller or a generator

Common Questions

How Do I Install It?

Open the ferrite, place it around the cable feeding the sensitive item and click it shut.

What If the Ferrite Is Larger Than My Cable?

That's fine. Faraday says too large is okay, but not too small.

What Are Ferrites Made Of?

Ferrites are ceramic compounds of a mixed oxide of iron and one or more other metals.

What's Included
