The Faraday Defense EMP Vehicle Protection Kit brings together the three products Faraday uses to protect vehicles: a T.R.A.P. Transient Reducing Auxiliary Plug, a T.R.A.P.-B for the battery and two high-saturation car ferrites. Each device works at a different point in your vehicle's electrical system.
Use the kit to help protect your vehicle from transients such as load changes, lightning strikes, conducted transients and an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). It's made for drivers who want a complete starting set of Faraday's vehicle devices in one order rather than choosing parts one at a time.
The T.R.A.P. goes in the 12-Volt auxiliary receptacle, the T.R.A.P.-B connects across the battery terminals and the two ferrites go on the battery wires. Faraday says putting energy traps at multiple points in your vehicle helps to better shunt away unwanted energy.
The T.R.A.P. contains a 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device with a turn-on time under 1 picosecond. Install it by plugging it into the 12-Volt auxiliary receptacle (cigarette lighter). The plug is 3 in long, so make sure there's room to insert it.
The T.R.A.P.-B contains the same 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device in a form that connects across the vehicle's battery terminals. Its weatherproof module is IP68 rated, with integrated rubber o-rings, automotive-grade wire, copper terminals and marine-grade heatshrink.
Ferrites clamp around power wires to reduce high-frequency current transients. Most ferrites saturate and stop providing protection when more than a couple of amps flow, but these custom-made auto ferrites are modified to allow significantly more current through before saturating.
Interconnected cable assemblies can still receive damaging energy when the vehicle is parked. The T.R.A.P. continues to act as a high-frequency energy sink when the vehicle is unpowered.
T.R.A.P. products draw essentially zero current except when there is a significant overvoltage, so the T.R.A.P. and T.R.A.P.-B won't drain your battery.
The T.R.A.P. and T.R.A.P.-B are hand assembled in the US. The T.R.A.P. has bronze, nickel-plated negative contacts, a gold-plated center contact and a Bakelite body, and it's rated for 25 Amps continuous. Both use an ultra high reliability, AEC Q101 qualified suppression component.
Daily drivers. Fit the full kit to the car or truck you use every day so protection stays in place whether it's running or parked.
Emergency-ready vehicles. Equip a vehicle you keep ready for storms, outages or other emergencies with all three of Faraday's vehicle device types.
A base to build on. Start with the kit, then add a T.R.A.P. to each additional auxiliary power outlet in the vehicle.
One T.R.A.P. protects at a single auxiliary outlet. The kit adds a T.R.A.P.-B across the battery and two high-saturation ferrites on the battery wires, so protection sits at several points in the vehicle, which Faraday says helps to better shunt away unwanted energy.
Standard ferrites saturate and stop providing protection when more than a couple of amps flow through the wires. The kit's ferrites are modified to allow significantly more current before saturating, which suits a vehicle's battery wires.
Your vehicle needs a 12-Volt auxiliary receptacle with room for the 3 in long T.R.A.P. You also need access to the battery terminals for the T.R.A.P.-B and to the battery wires for the ferrites. If you aren't comfortable working at your vehicle's battery, have a qualified technician install the T.R.A.P.-B and ferrites.
Faraday's recommended setup is a T.R.A.P. in every auxiliary power outlet, as well as a T.R.A.P.-B across the battery. The kit includes one T.R.A.P., so add another for each extra outlet your vehicle has.
Faraday explains that the danger to vehicles from an EMP is the high voltage introduced on the cables by E1 and E2. Those transients last only nanoseconds to microseconds, so small devices can suppress them. A home is different, because it would also see a powerful E1 current surge from the power grid.
Yes. Faraday recommends a T.R.A.P. in every auxiliary power outlet along with the T.R.A.P.-B across the battery.
No. T.R.A.P. products draw essentially zero current except when there is a significant overvoltage.
Yes. The ring terminals on the T.R.A.P.-B can be swapped out.
The Faraday Defense EMP Vehicle Protection Kit gives you a T.R.A.P. for the 12-Volt outlet, a T.R.A.P.-B for the battery and two high-saturation ferrites for the battery wires, all aimed at the fast transients that reach a vehicle's cables. If you'd like help planning where each device goes or how many extra T.R.A.P.s to add, the Outbound Power team is happy to help.
