OBD2 port transient protection plug for cars, trucks and RVs

The Faraday Defense T.R.A.P.-OBD2 EMP Vehicle Protection Plugs Into Your OBD2 Port to Add Transient Protection Close to Your Vehicle's Computer

The Faraday Defense T.R.A.P.-OBD2 is a transient protection device for your vehicle's OBD2 port. It contains a 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device with a turn-on time under 1 picosecond, in a compact housing that measures 1.75 x 1.875 x 0.875 in.

Faraday designed it for vehicles including cars, trucks and RVs. It works as an addition or an alternative to a T.R.A.P. in the cigarette lighter outlet, so you can add protection closer to the car's computer and still use your 12-volt auxiliary power outlet.

Faraday Defense T.R.A.P.-OBD2 EMP Vehicle Protection Features

Protection Near the Car's Computer

The OBD2 port connects to the car's computer. Faraday says that by plugging directly into this port, the T.R.A.P.-OBD2 secures vulnerable circuitry in the vicinity of the computer and adds an extra layer of defense against fast transients.

5,000-Watt Suppression With a Fast Turn-On

Inside is a 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device with a turn-on time under 1 picosecond, built to respond to very fast transients.

Keeps Your 12-Volt Outlet Free

Because it uses the OBD2 port, the T.R.A.P.-OBD2 lets you keep using the 12-volt auxiliary power outlet for other things while your vehicle still has transient protection.

Guards Against Several Kinds of Transients

Faraday lists vehicle transients from load changes such as A/C activation, conducted transients from charging ports and radiated energy from lightning strikes or electromagnetic pulses (EMPs).

Real-World Applications

Vehicles with a busy 12-volt outlet. If your cigarette lighter outlet is always in use, the T.R.A.P.-OBD2 adds transient protection through the OBD2 port instead.

Multi-point protection. Add it alongside other T.R.A.P. products so your vehicle has protection at more than one point.

Cars, trucks and RVs. Faraday designed it for use in a range of vehicles with an OBD2 port.

Practical Comparison

T.R.A.P.-OBD2 Versus a Cigarette Lighter T.R.A.P.

A T.R.A.P. in the cigarette lighter outlet takes up that outlet. The T.R.A.P.-OBD2 plugs into the 16-pin OBD2 port instead, closer to the car's computer, and leaves the 12-volt outlet free. Faraday says the OBD2 version doesn't make earlier T.R.A.P. setups obsolete, so you can use it as an addition or an alternative.

Buyer Guidance

Finding Your OBD2 Port

The OBD2 port is a standardized 16-pin connector, typically located under the dashboard. Faraday notes it has been mandated in most vehicles since the mid-'90s. Check that there's enough space around the port to insert the plug, and keep in mind that the T.R.A.P.-OBD2 occupies the port while it's installed, so unplug it when a diagnostic tool needs the port.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • Your vehicle has an OBD2 port
  • You want to keep your 12-volt outlet free
  • You want protection closer to the car's computer
  • You're building multi-point T.R.A.P. protection

Common Questions

What Is an OBD2 Port?

OBD2 stands for On-Board Diagnostics II. It's a standardized 16-pin connector that lets diagnostic tools communicate with the car's Engine Control Module (ECM) for diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

Does It Replace Other T.R.A.P. Products?

No. Faraday says the OBD2 design doesn't render previous systems obsolete. It adds versatility, so you can use it with an existing T.R.A.P. setup or on its own.

How Do I Install It?

Plug the T.R.A.P.-OBD2 into your vehicle's OBD2 port.

Transient Protection at the OBD2 Port

The Faraday Defense T.R.A.P.-OBD2 EMP Vehicle Protection puts a 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device with a turn-on time under 1 picosecond into your vehicle's OBD2 port, near the car's computer, while your 12-volt outlet stays free. If you'd like help adding it to your vehicle's T.R.A.P. setup, the Outbound Power team is happy to help.
