The SunGold Power 160 Amp DC Breaker Adds Overload Protection and a Service Disconnect to Your Battery Circuit

The SunGold Power 160 Amp DC Breaker is a two-pole molded case circuit breaker in SunGold's SG-C series. It guards a DC circuit against overloads and short circuits and gives you a manual disconnect point for maintenance and emergency shutdown.

It is made for battery-based solar and energy storage systems, between a battery bank, an inverter and other DC power equipment. It suits homeowners and installers whose battery circuit calls for 160A protection.

SunGold Power 160 Amp DC Breaker Features

160A Rating for Battery and Inverter Circuits

The 160A rating fits high-current battery and inverter circuits in smaller and mid-size systems. SunGold recommends 2/0 AWG cable at this rating.

Wide DC Voltage Range

The rated operating voltage runs from DC12V to 500V, with a 1000V insulation voltage.

25kA Breaking Capacity

SunGold rates the short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu) at 25kA and the rated breaking capacity (Ics) at 20kA. The thermo-magnetic release trips on sustained overloads as well as short circuits.

Works in Both Directions

The breaker handles battery charging and discharging. Overcurrent protection is the same either way, and only the short-circuit breaking capacity depends on the wiring direction.

Clear ON and OFF Positions

Marked switch positions make it easy to see whether the circuit is live. A red button lets you trip the breaker by hand.

Real-World Applications

Battery to inverter link. Protect and switch the DC feed between a battery bank and an inverter.

Solar energy storage. Add a protected disconnect to the storage side of a solar system.

Backup power. Shut down the battery circuit quickly during service or an emergency.

Practical Comparison

SunGold Power 160 Amp DC Breaker Versus a Plain Disconnect Switch

A switch alone isolates the circuit but does not trip on an overload or short circuit. This breaker does both jobs in one part.

SunGold Power 160 Amp DC Breaker Versus the 300A SG-C Model

The two share the same frame size, voltage rating and breaking capacity. The 300A model is meant for larger battery banks and uses heavier 350 kcmil cable, while the 160A model pairs with 2/0 AWG.

Buyer Guidance

Installation Rules

SunGold requires vertical mounting with the arc chamber on top. Horizontal and upside-down mounting are prohibited, and the terminals tighten to 5.0N.m. The rated ambient range is -10°C to +40°C at altitudes up to 2000m.

This May Be A Good Fit If

  • Your battery circuit calls for 160A protection
  • You use 2/0 AWG battery cable
  • Your DC system runs at 500V or less
  • You want a breaker you can reset instead of a fuse

Common Questions

How Should It Be Wired?

Connect the battery or other DC source to the top LINE terminals and the inverter or load to the bottom LOAD terminals. SunGold recommends this normal connection for full breaking performance.

Are the Poles Polarity Specific?

No. SunGold states that the positive and negative poles are interchangeable.

How Do I Switch It Back On After a Trip?

Push the handle down to OFF, then push it up to ON. The handle won't go up while the breaker is still in the tripped state.
