EMP Home Protection Helps You Detect An EMP And Guard Your Electronics

EMP home protection covers the devices that help you know when an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or a solar coronal mass ejection (CME) is happening, and that help keep its energy away from your home's wiring and electronics. Every product in this collection comes from Faraday Defense. They work together, so you can start with a detector and add ferrites and plugs over time.

Detection comes first. The DEFCON EMP Alert System plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet, watches both the power lines and the air, and sounds an 85 dB alarm when it detects an EMP or CME disturbance. The DEFCON Pulse Tag is a small, always-on detector you can clip to a backpack or keep on a key ring. It sounds a continuous alarm when it detects an E1 or E2 pulse. The DEFCON Home Switch goes a step further. When it detects an EMP or CME, it sounds an alarm and mechanically trips your main breaker, up to 200 amps, typically in 1 to 3 seconds.

Ferrites protect the wiring itself. The High-Saturation EMP Whole-House Ferrite clamps around an insulated incoming power wire in your breaker panel. Faraday Defense says a three-wire service needs three of them and a four-wire service needs four. Broadband EMP Ferrites snap around the cables of devices that stay plugged in, such as computers, TVs, solar wiring, charge controllers and generators. They come in six inner diameters from 0.2 to 1 inch. The T.R.A.P.-AC is a 5,000-watt transient suppression plug for the AC outlet of an inverter or portable generator.

Work inside an electrical panel should be done by a licensed electrician, including installing whole-house ferrites and the DEFCON Home Switch actuator. The plug-in devices, the DEFCON EMP Alert and the T.R.A.P.-AC, need no wiring. When sizing broadband ferrites, choose an inner diameter that fits around the cable, since a ferrite that's too large still works but one that's too small won't close.

Protect the rest of your gear too. Store spare electronics in Faraday bags, build custom shielding with Faraday fabric, and guard your car or truck with EMP vehicle protection. EMP Home Protection FAQs

What is EMP home protection?

EMP home protection is equipment that helps detect an electromagnetic pulse and reduce the energy it can send through your home's wiring and electronics. In this collection that means DEFCON detectors and alarms, the DEFCON Home Switch that trips your main breaker, whole-house ferrites for your incoming power wires, broadband ferrites for device cables, and the T.R.A.P.-AC plug for inverters and portable generators.

How does the DEFCON Home Switch work?

The DEFCON Home Switch detects an EMP or CME, sounds an alarm and uses a linear actuator to trip your main breaker, disconnecting the building from the power grid. Faraday Defense says it reacts to the E1, E2 and E3 parts of an EMP and the E3-like disturbance of a CME. It's designed for main breakers up to 200 amps, trips in typically 1 to 3 seconds and is for indoor installation only.

How many whole-house ferrites does my home need?

Faraday Defense says most homes need three whole-house ferrites, one each for Line 1, Line 2 and the shared Neutral/Ground of a three-wire service. A four-wire service, with a separate neutral and ground, needs four. Each ferrite clamps around an insulated incoming power wire in the breaker panel and has a 0.72 inch inner diameter, so have a licensed electrician check your service and install them.

What size broadband EMP ferrite should I buy?

Buy a broadband EMP ferrite with an inner diameter that fits around the cable you want to protect. They come in 0.2, 0.28, 0.39, 0.51, 0.72 and 1 inch sizes. Faraday Defense says a ferrite that's too large still works, but one that's too small won't close around the cable. Looping the cable through the ferrite gives extra suppression.

What is the difference between the DEFCON EMP Alert and the Pulse Tag?

The DEFCON EMP Alert stays plugged into a wall outlet at home, while the Pulse Tag is a small battery-powered detector you carry. The EMP Alert monitors power lines and the air for EMP and CME disturbances and sounds an 85 dB alarm. The Pulse Tag runs on a CR1620 coin cell, detects E1 and E2 pulses but not a CME, and clips to a backpack or key ring.

Can I protect a portable generator from an EMP?

Faraday Defense makes the T.R.A.P.-AC for this. It's a 5,000-watt transient voltage suppression device built into a plug that goes into the three-prong AC receptacle of an inverter or portable generator, with no wiring. Broadband EMP Ferrites can also be snapped around generator cables, and a stored generator can go in a Faraday generator dry bag.
