Faraday Fabric Lets You Build Your Own RF And EMF Shielding

Faraday fabric is shielding material you can cut, sew or mount to build your own Faraday enclosure, line a wall or cover a window. The metal plating in the fabric reflects radio frequency energy, so a space lined with it blocks wireless signals from passing through. Every Faraday fabric in this collection comes from Faraday Defense, the maker of the NX3, JACKET and NEST-Z Faraday bags.

The CYBER nickel-copper fabrics are the largest group, in eight types from 42 to 54 inches wide. Faraday Defense rates them from more than 50 dB for the light filtering mesh to more than 85 dB for NC-I, with the NC-TF taffeta rated 75 to 105 dB. There is a ripstop version, an adhesive-backed ripstop, a black fabric, a diamond pattern and a Berry Compliant ripstop. The CYBER copper fabrics include CX, rated above 75 dB from 10 MHz to 6 GHz, and a 100% copper non-woven fabric rated at 80 dB on average from 100 MHz to 10 GHz.

For other jobs, the CYBER Silver Elastic fabric stretches and is rated above 60 dB from 14 kHz to 10 GHz. The CYBER PRO-BARRIER is a 48 inch foil barrier with two solid aluminum layers, rated at 85 dB from 100 MHz to 10 GHz under IEEE-299. The NEST-Z barrier rolls come in 3.0 mil and 7.0 mil aluminized versions, 36 inches wide. The CYBER FX barrier is different from the rest: a 1 mm magnetic shielding film for AC and DC magnetic fields up to 1,000 Hz, such as the 60 Hz fields around electrical systems.

Choose a Faraday fabric by what you need to block and how you'll use it. Radio frequency shielding calls for a nickel-copper, copper, silver or foil fabric, rated over the frequency range you care about. Low-frequency magnetic fields need the CYBER FX film instead. For windows, the MAX Blackout CYBER Shielding Curtains use a CYBER Diamond lining rated at 70 dB, with 52 x 84 inch panels in taupe or gray. Most CYBER fabrics are sold by the linear foot at their full width, so you order the length your project needs.

What is Faraday fabric?

Faraday fabric is a textile or film with conductive metal in it that blocks radio frequency signals, so you can use it to make your own shielding. The CYBER fabrics in this collection are polyester plated with nickel and copper, copper alone or silver, and the PRO-BARRIER has two solid aluminum layers. Line a box, a wall, a bag or a window with it to keep wireless signals from passing through.

How is Faraday fabric sold?

Most Faraday fabric here is sold by the linear foot at its full width, so a quantity of 10 gets you 10 feet. Widths run from 25.5 inches for the CYBER FX barrier to 55 inches for the Silver Elastic fabric. The CYBER copper and Silver Elastic fabrics are shipped uncut on a continuous roll when you order more than one foot. The NEST-Z barrier comes in 36 inch by 1 yard pieces.

How do I compare Faraday fabric shielding ratings?

Compare the dB rating and the frequency range it was tested over, since a fabric shields well only across that range. Faraday Defense rates the NC-TF taffeta at 75 to 105 dB from 10 MHz to 3.6 GHz, with a 90 dB average. NC-I is rated above 85 dB from 10 MHz to 3 GHz, and the PRO-BARRIER foil is rated at 85 dB from 100 MHz to 10 GHz, a wider frequency range.

Does Faraday fabric block magnetic fields?

The RF shielding fabrics don't block low-frequency magnetic fields, but the CYBER FX Low Frequency Barrier does. It's a nickel-free magnetic shielding film for AC or DC magnetic fields from 0 to 1,000 Hz, including the 60 Hz fields around electrical systems. It is 1 mm thick and 25.5 inches wide, can be cut with sheet metal tools, and can be bent and shaped to cover the area you need.

Can I sew or glue Faraday fabric?

Yes, most CYBER fabrics are easy to cut and sew, and one comes with its own adhesive. The NC-RS-A ripstop has an adhesive backing, so you can apply it straight to a flat surface. Faraday Defense recommends the Silver Elastic fabric for dry, level surfaces such as walls, and suggests wearing gloves when handling it. The CYBER FX barrier can be attached with glue, screws or rivets.

What are RF shielding curtains?

RF shielding curtains are window curtains with a Faraday fabric lining that blocks wireless signals. The MAX Blackout CYBER Shielding Curtains have a CYBER Diamond lining rated at 70 dB and shield against EMF, Wi-Fi and cell phone signals. The 100% polyester thermal-backed outer layer blocks light completely. Each panel is 52 x 84 inches, in taupe or gray, sold as one panel or a pair.
